Terminator assault squad
I would choose Terminator. Good both assault capability and heavy weapons. They can also walk and then shoot.
I would go for shooty terminators for versatility. I also like them better because, in my opinion, they require more skill to keep alive and use effectively then TH/SS assault terminators. TH/SS terms have a pretty strait forward purpose and can weather a lot more low ap fire. Both however still die just as easily to a hail of lasgun or shoota fire.
I still run my shooty terms with a Crusader, but don't usualy use them to assault (at least not right away). The Crusader is more for blocking LoS from the terms other then what I want the terms shooting at. Kind of a different way to use the Crusader/Terminator combo but its worked very well for me (helped win me games).
I also like using the assault cannon with them although the new rules for the cyclone missile launcher, being able to fire twice, makes me want to remodel them, lol.

shooting terminators with librarian in termi armor and with gates of infinity
I'll have to go with the regular terminators. I usually deep strike them near an objective to help hold off oncoming enemy.
I normally play 1500pts, and feel that assault terminators with a land raider is costly pts wise. I haven't played with the new 5th ed rules yet, but from what i seems that vehicles are more resilient now. If only they had fleet...
Assault termies in LRC. Just yesterday, my TH/SS survived rapid fire from 32 necrons and 3 heavy destroyers (only lost 2).
Termies, good in close combat and have 10 shots. Also, assault cannons and cyclones are devastating to tyranids
I think Assault ones rock the house over regular ones.
reason is, Of all the games I play, only 2 armies don't get close and that's Tau and Imperials (depending on set up).
I would get a mixture of both, lightening claws and thunder hammers make a big difference when it comes into the assault phase and when it comes to smacking some vehicles and other walkers if the dice is rolled right.
I usually get molested by terminators with lightening claws and thunder hammers (chaos and space marines)
if you can get both I would get both assault and range ones.
Assault Termies all with lightning claws myself. I put them with Shrike and infiltrate for a turn one assault. I like to keep my regular initiative for killing orcs and pretty much anything but eldar, d eldar and nids. I just stay away from high intiative power weapons and armor.

I'd say majority of the time normal termies, since they are more flexible. I don't play many armies where a squad of normal termies, especially accompanied by my commander couldnt take most units on the table.
However if I was going up against an units that needed a large number of hits to take it down, I'd possibly choose the assult ones (although even then there is something to be said for stormbolter and heavy flaming your target just before you charge, that can even th numbers out.
If the enemy was toting power weapons then maybe I'd choose thunder hammer + shield termies, but actually anything with that sort of weapon I try not to get into combat with at all. Banshees tend to magically attract all the anti infantry fire my army has until they are dead.
I used to prefer regular terminators but after a test run in a few tournaments with a 5-man team of assault terminators with nothing but thunder hammers and storm shields I've changed my mind.
Who doesn't love a 2+ save combined with a 3+ invulnerable and strength 8 power weapons.
But any terminator is a good terminator.
