Hey all, just a quick question - do you think the Ironclad is worth taking over the basic dreadnought?
I already give my dread extra armour and so it would be a 15 point increase for additional side armour and an extra base attack but at the cost of down-grading the multi-melta to a meltagun. Is this a good trade off?
I already field one dread and have plans to add a second and put them both in drop pods for a first turn landing, to be followed by Sternguard hopefully on the second turn.
The rest of my force (a thunderfire cannon and 3 tactical squads) start on foot.
Many thanks and good gaming
AV13 is nice. The Ironclad is a useful little number if you want a tougher Dread that can fight in combat. Stick it in a pod and go nuts. It will die all the same to meltas though, so be careful where you drop it.

I don't think regular Dreads are really tough enough personally. I would sepnd the extra points to take a venerable.
As has been mentioned the Iron clad in a drop pod can be rather amusing.

They're really good if you can keep them away from melta type weaponry.
Since my main opponent really likes his Fire Dragons in a Falcon I tend to use a regular ranged dread instead... but I use it all the time vs my Ork friend.
The trick is to get it locked in close combat as early as possible. Once there you don't have to worry about meltas blasting it to bits as much. Even a power fist will have a hard time damaging that high armor. I find it really useful to tie up large groups of hordish squads since it can take the beats while the rest of your army focuses on other targets.
Honestly, I'm thinking the Ironclad is simply indispensable, if only for the survivability that comes with that AV13. Being immune to anything short of an Autocannon, Meltabomb or a Marine Powerfist is absolutely priceless, and it's the only way a Dreadnought can do that.
