Command Squad 262
- 4x Storm Bolter, 4x Storm Shield, 4x Lightning Claw, Company Standard.
Yes, veterans do seem to have a third arm. This unit is a result of me thinking about the most effective unit to roll Lysander in. He’s a close combat monster so Assault Termies spring to mind, but then his “bolter drill” which would go to waste.
So what we have here is a unit that shoots like a unit of regular terminators but is pretty mean in assault too. I would also argue that they are tougher than a unit of Terminators (maybe even Assault Termies) since they have 3+ 3++ and Feel No Pain. They also strike in initiative order so less close combat attacks will be incoming. Also FNP makes Lysander even harder. The only weakness besides the cost (and it’s not that much more than a unit of Termies it hits almost as hard as) is that I don’t think the Apothecary can take a Storm Shield because only “veterans” can. So when the ridiculous amounts of firepower get slung this unit’s way, he may be the first to fall, and the whole squad loses FNP.
For added flavour one could also add Cassius for re-rolls to hit and wound in Close Combat, mmmm delicious. Anyways just some food for thought.
Why not just put Lysander in a unit of Sternguard?
That would certainly make the most of his Bolter Drill.

Ya I was thinking about that, I don't see many people with Lysander in Sternguard squads though, although it would certainly seem effective. The idea of the Command Squad is for more close combat ability and to be able to shoot and then assault.
So what do people normally run Lysander with?

I'm a big fan of Lysander, 10 Setrnguard, 2 Heavy Flamers and a Lightning Claw in a Drop Pod. Makes a big mess of things when it drops down.
The more I think about it though, the more effective it seems. Lysander boosts the units effectiveness at shooting while at the same time making the enemy think twice about assaulting it, which means more effective shooting. Only downside being that you don't get to "choose" which unit he is going after.
