I have a Last chancers-based Imp guard army that is pretty darn cool that I don't want to stop using and can't really financially-afford to 'convert' (by buying lots more models) to a normally-structured Imp Guard army...
1st up, I have searched but I can't find any references as to whether or not the Last Chancers are in the new Imp Guard codex... Does anyone know if they are or not?
2nd, if they AREN'T, how can I go about still using it? Can I? If so how? If not, what do you think I should do?
The Last Chancers, as you know them, have almost no chance of being in the new Codex. There will be a Penal Legionaire squad, but I highly doubt they will be they same equip-them-any-way-you-want style of squad they once where.
I'm going to guess that it is likely that folks who went out and built highly equipped Last Chancers armies are going to be hit hard by the new 'dex, just like Demon Bomb players when the Chaos Space Marine book came out.
If your army is just really cool looking, but armed more like normal squads, then you'll be OK. Or maybe they can fit as Storm Troopers if they are geared up a tad.
Last Chancers are gone, and so is Gaunt it seems...but Sly Marbo has apparently risen from the dead.
You can still use it if you can get your opponent to agree to let you, this was the basis behind the Armored Company mini-dex, which is oddly enough finally being semi-incorporated into the new IG dex it seems.
If you get lucky in about 5 years when they pull the 6th or 7th edition IG dex they might put Col. Schaffer and Gaunt back in.

Nope, like recklessfable said the last chancers along with schaffler and kage will be gone, replaced with a penal legionare squad. These guys will probobly be light infantry style squads and not the ultimate BAMF's they are now.

I too have a Lt Shaeffer Themed Army (as one of my varients) In 4th I'd get Shaeffer, 3 Hardened Vet Squads, and a pile of Light Infantry, with three basalisks, set up the basalisks, then tell my opponent to deploy before I deploy my Commando Themed Army.
I just loved em.
Unfortunately, Lt Shaeffer is not on any of the quick reference sheets, or summary stat shets for guard, so it's highly, highly unlikely he'll be in the new codex.
There is a faint glimmer of hope - maybe there'll be options for your squad, like buying a "commando" special character for your platoon that'll give you some shaeffer-like options (Like giving your men Infiltrate, Or the option to take hardened vets / BS4 troops at a higher price) but that's guessing - We will just have to see the new dex (I'll be stunned if it's not there though)
Whatever happens though, you won't have the pick and mix selection you have now, or any of the "features" like sub units etc available - They're just too complicated for the Streamlined rules you see today (Stays crunchy cries a little as he opens his new dex with 2"high, block capital, multi-coloured type, which tells you about special characters in a speech bubble from a cartoon animal.Yes, that's a panda with a flak jacket on.)
