The same thing that people are complaining about is the same thing that makes guard almost bandwagon proof. Its smart when you think about if your going to start a new imperial guard army you have 2 choices. Either pay $22 for 10 guardsmen or pay $40 for some tanks, either way they are going to make money off players but especially new players.
While us vets get the pleasure of knowing that bandwagoners paid more then double to join us.
How do you guys feel about it?
I just started collecting guard late last month (before I had heard about the new codex), so I'm trying to buy as many boxes as I can (2 so far ) before I get well and truly shafted. However, with my limited budget I can't stock up. I think I'll just end up buying old boxes of troops off of eBay and using the new boxes for Hardened Vets.
Now, I've got problem because I'm not yet sure whether converted Cadians or Steel Legion. I'm thinking about buying Infantry boxes for safety and maybe try to later sell them without making profit but not losing cash at all (and there will be people wanting to lay their hands on 20 men boxes). If only GW gave Heavy Weapons or additional scepial weapons this exchange would make sense, but now... it's just cashspawning.
I have been collecting IG for a year now, so I’m probably not a veteran. There are two IG players in my local club (including me) and I know of one lad who is looking at collecting IG after the new launch. They aren’t the cheapest army to collect and require more effort than most, with the possible exception of Orks and Tyranids, to paint and model, so that always deters a lot of new players.
There will always be the fad buyers but after a few months they will move onto the latest craze and hopefully us IG players can pick up some cheap bargains!
I'm kind of a new guard player as well, but i now have enough 20 men boxes to last me, so im looking forward to the launch, i mean, the new command squad looks loads better than the old one
So all the prices are going up? I have had 1,000 point artillery-focused IG army for a while but thought I should hold out for the new rules to see what I want. I have tried to keep up with the rumors but there is often alot of activity and they are just rumors.
Are the basic troops new too? Can I have more heavies than 3 basilisks? How do you know what to buy to stock up?
I think many people will still jump on the bandwagon despite the money. For adult players - WH40K is not expensive when you compare it with other adult hobbies - like boating or collectible cars lol. And kids have no bills and plenty of money. I have always thought GW was greedy but at least they have stayed in business while many game companies failed.
What makes guard special to me is that they are so weak (yes there are power plays and cheese available). I think many will jump on the bandwagon so they can have a bunch of tanks and elite soilders and exploit the new more powerful codex.
By this are you meaning will we see loads of IG armies popping up because it's new and shiny? In some cases and places, yes you will. But as I have seen posted before, Gaurd armies have been harder to start up (money wise) than a 500pt SM army is, and that should deter some of the hype followers.
And who's to say the hype is a bad thing? More players means more sales means more models. Right?
So bandwagon proof? If the new codex has similarities to the old codex, bandwagon resistant .
Good thing I had my guard army for the past 6 years. Although my guard army is relatively small, around 3,000 points in all, I have alot of the tanks that are no longer in use, and are coming back, griffon, exterminator. That's about it. I started buying some more 20 man troops especially since they wont be around much longer. They should still make the 20 man boxed sets and have the 10 man as upgrades, but w/e. I have plenty of plasma and melta guns in my army already. I think if people want to jump on the bandwagon, they're going to.
Well, I think it will be a good thing if people start guard as a second army, or even as their third, or first.
Because I'm so sick and tired of playing versus orks and marines.......
I have just finished stockpiling my troops yesterday (as you can read in the "Burning out trimming mould lines and painting XXX guardsmen). So I'm all set I hope.. we shall see
As for new players paying more to buy the same amount of troops, hmh, well if GW makes money, then they produce more and new products, this makes me happy as a gamer, even if my waller suffers
I hope it gets rid of some of the guardsmen are rubbish talk that is constantly spewing from peoples mouths, haha flaslights. yes im sorry my men arent superhuman warriors who fire rocket proppelled shells at everything. /rant
as for the new 10 man boxes, they are getting bits to make the new penal troopers and some upgrades to make veteran style stuff so actually you get more stuff in there so it isnt that much of a price hike after all. plus the new commands more than make up for it.
Guard armies do tend to be a tad large though but with a platoons worth in a battleforce it actually means you can just go ooo i need two troops choices, so two battleforces and a command box you have enough for a lot of men with some sentinel goodness in there as well! Im still a little anxious to see what happens about the heavy weapons teams though.
All in all I think that the fact you will need a fair amount of men to make a decent army will discourage some of the younger or more inexperienced players from jumping on the bandwagon whilst encouraging more variety in the more veteran players.
