Hey guys. the other day i was playing at my local club. One person i was playing claimed to have 3 weapons on the standard tactical marine. going through the codex under tactical marines wargear it said
now. does each marine get all the above? because i think its kind of ridiculous if you can DECIDE what weapon to use. for example
i shoot you @ XX" with my bolters then you move in closer with your units. now i can charge you
so i shoot you with my pistols and charge you getting 3 attacks per model in close combat because i'm charging. have 2 CC weapons and have a base attack of 1
what is going on?
I believe that basic marines have a bolter and bolt pistol, but no Close Combat Weapon. CHAOS Space Marines have all three, but not imperial ones,
Rork: In the dark future of the 41st millennium there is only friendship.
Fenrir: and magic.
Kaiser-: My Little Chaos Marine, Friendship is Heresy?
Yes the above post is correct.
Your basic space marine has access to a boltgun and a bolt pistol but no close combat weapon. He can fire either in his turn. The purpose of the bolt pistol is to be able to fire something before an assault as you cannot shoot a rapid fire boltgun and then assault. So your friend has been getting it wrong, he's still able to fire boltguns at you and then shoot pistols and assault but he wouldn't get + 1 for having an extra close combat weapon.
The sergeant is a exception but is still open to people not quite getting it right. He is also equipped with a boltgun and bolt pistol and can replace either of these for a special weapon. So for example if he wanted to have a close combat weapon and a pistol to get an extra attack he would have to trade his boltgun for the close combat weapon and therefore forfit using it with the rest of the squad. Or if he wanted to take a power fist and a boltgun he wouldn't be able to fire his pistol before an assault. So yeah tactical marine can have access to three different weapons not even sergeants.
Chaos are an exception of course but we don't have to worry about them^
Just check his codex it makes it all clear
you cant fire rapid fire weapons and then assault, the part about a marine having a bolter and a bolt pistol is right. so the play can fire the bolt pistol before charging.
As to my knowledge only the Sergeant gets a CC Weapon. I think in game terms, when they get in close combat with their adversary they are punching and swinging and crap the troop reaches down to grab his pistol to get in a pop shot. Hence when you roll dice in the assault phase you win and lose some fights, your opponent hits the pistol out of the way and the round goes wild.
Yup, I'm afraid your friend is telling porkies there, its bolt pistol, bolter and grenades and thats the lot. Like the above posts say various options for exchanging but not adding.
My problem is that I've known too many versions of the 40k/necromunda rules now and I confuse them in my head. Even if he did have all three weapons I thought you could only use two close combat weapons in an assault if you weren't carrying a two handed gun like a bolter? Think I'm a bit out of date there, I'll have to go ask a chaos player...
Where a normal Tac Marine only has a Bolt Pistol and Bolter, there are several examples in the Codex where you can have three or more.
A Command Squad Veteran with a Lightning Claw, Plasma Gun, Storm Shield, a Bike with a Twin-Linked Bolter, and Frag and Krak Grenades. Or a Honor Guard with a Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon, Bolter, Relic Blade, Frag and Krak Grenades.
I'm glad that Space Marines finally learned how to use a holster in this book, the whole 2 weapon thing from last book was a little too restricted.
The only unit that can take 3 true weapons, rather than 2 and a shield, are the honour guard. Pistol, bolter and power weapon as standard. 4 if you give them auxiliary grenade launchers.
Captains and Masters can also take the auxiliary grenade launcher. I don't know why so many people complain about the grenade launcher, I think it's great.
Quote from page 132 codex:
Boltgun or bolt pistol
The placement of the word or between Bolter or Bolt Pistol is very important in establishing the number of weapon options they can "swap" for x points, that is to say, including the chainsword, only two weapons.
Also I don't see the relevence of mentioning frag and krak grenages in the wargear as that is standard on all power armor marines, including tacticals. The focus of this discussion is around bolters, bolt pistols and chainswords I believe.
As "Little Brother" says, Honor Guard are the only models with all three of boltgun, bolt pistol and a CC weapon, power weapons in this case instead of chainswords. Although Chaplain Cassius also has this "uber grit" like wargear, but his bolter is actualy a suped up combi-flamer and he has the crozius arcanum for a power weapon but I digress.

Nope, I'm afraid that I'm exactly right. I completely agree with you that Comamnd Squad Veterans only come with 2 weapons, look at the entry on page 132.So, I replace the Veteran's Chainsword with a Plasmagun, it's Bolt Pistol with a Lightning Claw, and then it may also have a Storm Shield, never saying that it must replace anything. Then for laughs, stick it on a Bike as well.Originally Posted by GW
And on Honor Guard squads:
The same type wording applies allowing for a single model with a Power Weapon, Bolt Pistol, Bolter, Relic Blade, Auxiliary Grenade Launcher, and Chapter Banner for around what, 6 weapons on one model?
