Hi guys, I just played my first couple of games, and I think my army has a real problem. Tanks and armour. Here is my list:
Chapter Master (AoBR captain)
Librarian in terminator armour
Dread with MM
Dread with AC and heavy flamer
10 shooty terminators
9 Tactical marines, ML, Flamer
9 Tactical marines ML, Flamer
9 Tactical marines meltagun
9 Tactical marines
5 Scouts CC weapons
I noticed with the above list that I basically have to roll 6s on the vehicle damage chart with the missiles and dread weapons to scratch most tanks. Should I just ignore them? These are pretty much all the models I have, but I'm open to suggestions if I need to add something for anti-tank. Also, I only faced marine armis last night. Will I have an easier time against other armies?
It's just frustrating, since I faced 2 mechanized forces, and it didn't really feel like I could do anything against them.
Any and all help welcome,
STR8 weapons (ML) will need 6 to glance, and then another 6 (because of the -2) to do anything. Reality is that Armor 14 is hard to kill - no way around it. STR9 or 10 weapons, or Melta guns are needed. CC attack against rear armor are good too (Power and Chain Fists). I have seen games when two Land Raiders would move 6 and swap shots for the whole game, neither blowing up at the end - rare occurrences before...
I would recommend getting Bikers with Melta guns (MMelta on Attack Bikes), or a Land Raider on your own. Also Speeders with MMeltas are interesting...I would not do a Predator with LasCannons - too expensive IMHO.
I recomend the Master taking a Relic Blade and Artificer Armour, and the Libby taking Gate and Smite.
Dread with AC is a fine choice also.
Those 10 termies are a BIG point sink. Consider reducing the size to 5 termies, and take another troop choice
Two with ML/Flamer is OK, cheap and efficient.
What is the heavy weapon that goes with the melta gun?
The other tactical squad with no upgrades, is that seriously how you took them?
The best weapon your troops can cary only reduce the required roll value by 1 anyway. I think you've yet to get used to fighting vehicles or someone was telling you porkies...
What you need to do is either give a more detailed explaination as to what you have in your army, or seriously get the last two tactical squads with both special and heavy weapons on each.
You also should consider putting power fists on your sergeants and combat-squading all your tactica squads so that the heavy weapon can stand still and fire while the other half roam the battle-field and slap tanks with those power fists.
In the list you specified, those termies will sport power fists as well. You should have made good use of those, as they hit with the same strength as a krak missile.
Which reminds me, you are firing Krak missiles from those launchers and not Frags, right? You can chose which missile to fire at the begining of each of your shooting phases. Against vehicles and big infantry targets, fire Kraks, against normal infantry, fire Frags, else you will need those 6's to glance even a rhino!

...also, looks like you could add/swap weapons on some of your models to add extra anti-armor punch with a minimal amount of $$$ - Scouts, some of the TAC squads, Termies could take heavy weapons to increase the number of shots you would have available, without the need to go out and buy $100+ worth of new models...
Thanks for the input guys. I forgot to mention that the terminators have 2 heavy flamers in the squad. Also, I'm trying to field a 1800 pt force, since that covers most of the local games around here.
The tactical squads are 9 including sergeants. I honestly don't remember how I got them. I started this army 5 or so years back, and I'm trying to make do with what I have for the time being. Is there a good way to get heavy weapon marines for cheap? I imagine I could get AoBR marines, but I would end up with a lot of extra marines. Basically, I tried to evenly distribute my marines across as many squads as I could.
As to the HQ choices, I'm open to suggestions for wargear as I'm largely taking as many options as I can to fill points. As for the librarian, I took smite and null zone.
I also have a chaplain in power armour that I can use, but haven't yet, since I don't really have any CC-focussed squads at the moment.
1 Box of Devs should give you 6 or so weapons (it has more weapons than marines), if you have extra bodies to put them on. I would recommend doing that for now.
GW sell heavy weapons models individually, failing that buy a devvie box set and you get several different heavy weapons + models to put them on, so you can switch between them as and when you need. Its more expensive to buy the models individually from GW, but that is to be expected.
As noted before, there are a vast array of bitz stores online, I mainly use two UK based suppliers, bitzandkits.co.uk, and bitzbox.co.uk. They are pretty reasonable but usually out of stock of anything worth buying
I did some checking around, and it's kind of sad that it looks to be cheaper to buy the tactical squads from AoBR than to buy the few models that I would need.
Well thanks for the help.
Edit: worst case, I can run 3 10-man squads, and be a few points short.
