I've been looking thru the forums on how people use their Inquisitor Lords and almost all the lists involve his retinue being shooty. In fact many of the recommendations have been to drop the crusaders. IMO the crusader is one of the best CC WH unit but is he too expensive?
I really want to use this very cool looking unit effectively, is it possible?
Hm, GW says yes, most players say no. I don't have any experience using inquisitor retinues, but I've seen lists with CC retinues around. How they performed? No clue.
Kill the mutant! Purge the unclean!
CC retinues perform poorly, because they are only s3 t3. They are very expensive to have them run up, do minimal damage, and crumble. Shooty squads do much more over the course of the game and are cheaper, because they don't need a transport. Best of all they don't die as easily because they are in the back getting cover saves. This issue is compounded by the fact that they would be a dedicated assault unit in an inquisition army, both of which are primarily shooty and reactive. If you want a witch hunter inquisitor I would recommend 3 Gun servitors, 2 Chirurgeons, some other extra wounds like acolytes, and an inquisitor with just "Hammer of the Witches." Of course Inq squads in general have become less effective in 5th because of wound allocation bypassing their abilities.
They can be cool-looking squad with awesome fluff-power around them, but other units can do same things for less points and better.
I used melee retinues with power-stake, henchmen with man-catchers, crusaders, chirurgeons. That was my squad to take out tyranid monstrous creatures, it works magic, but it is a VERY narrow tool and hard to use, (you still need a delivery system) any swarm unit takes them out like a squad of harlequins charging fire warriors; for the same point cost you can get an exorcist that does it much faster without a need of a delivery system, and there is nothing more fluffy than sisters setting things on fire!
