I've been considering starting an IG army for a while now, but having looked at everything objectively and weighing up my options, I've decided that I don't want a 100 strong force made of meat shields and some WW2 throwbacks.
So instead, I've decided on an army of fanatical arsonists and melta-lovin' saints. I realise I've pretty much stepped off the ledge into the volcano in terms of difficulty to play, so I wanted to drop into this corner of LO and ask for some advice.
I've just ordered the Codex, 2 Battle Sister squads, and a Seraphim squad. I'm going to be heading out into the big wide world to get other things like heavy support and HQ sometime tomorrow, so I guess the question is...
Considering the basis of my army, the 2 Battle Sister and 1 Seraphim squads, what would you recommend I go for next? At this point I'm aiming for about 1000 points.
Buy another seraphim squad so you'll have a full 10. Then get a cannoness and one more sister squad to use as celestians. Since the squads come with flamer/storm bolter you'll want to order a few Heavy flamer blisters and some melta guns. Other than that its pretty much up to you. Yer gonna need rhinos of course. I bought immolaters so that I could make my rhinos look purty and swap out turrets for more immolaters If I wanted. And of course you'll want excorsits.

this is for your leisure, may get a laugh out of the vid as well
Vote4pedro is right about weapons -Meltas and heavy flamers are a wise investment. Rhinos may come with more playstyle attunement. Sisters work either on foot or mechanized, but I would make that decision your own. There are lists that use foot sisters that work very well, and some are just mechanized and use astonishingly too.
But to start off to a slow pace I would buy saint-celestine so you can use her as a canoness with a blessed weapon and a jump pack and a blister of seraphim (2). In my experiences having more than 7 strong squad of seraphim is going overboard.
An exorcist is always welcome in any sister force.
For my liking is an inquisitor with an assassin, i usually use callidus, but you can experiment with any of them, there are many threads that talk about them here.
Maybe, as your force expands you will need even more sisters, or maybe you can look into allying with daemonhunters or induct marines or imperial guard. This army offers great deal of options to you, good luck and once again welcome.
I'm thinking my Sisters will be into their flamey weapons in a big way, really play on the burning the heretic part of the fluff. I'd also thought about having an inducted Space Marine squad, but that would be counter-productive considering I want a Sister based force!
So far, my shopping list for tomorrow is Celestine, 2 Seraphim, an Immolator, and hopefully an Excorcist.
My end goal is to have an Apocalypse sized force, but I fear that it will take some considerable time to aciheve!
I find my army works best without allies. The more sisters you have the more faith points you have. Not to mention you cant have space marines with sisters. You can bring some inquisition if you want, but I tend to not bother. between the excorsists and the meltas there are not many vehicles you can't deal with. Monoliths however are a pain in the ass. Land raiders are difficult too, but at least you can melta them. If you're going to use any allies I would take guard and bring as many lascannons as you can fit in the army. then you can focus more on flamers and heavy flamers with your sisters and show you're opponent just how dirty flamers can be.
Well, you can't have sisters commanding around some smurfs, but you can have smurfs commanding sisters. (Bloody sexists.)
Lets face it, the Sororitas don't really need Space Marine intervention to get the job done. They're perfectly capable of burning the heretic all by themselves!
Ok ok, I'll contribute now. If you want an inquisitor and an assassin, you might consider a shooty DH inquisitor. That way you get some long range dakka and take care of any deepstrikes that may pop out at you. Nothing like 6 bolter shots, a psycannon, and a plasma template to discourage close encounters of the melee kind.
On a more general note, welcome to the boards. Read up on army lists and don't buy anything on impulse. Make sure you need it, make sure you paint it, make sure you play it. At this point you can't go wrong with sisters and seraphim.
Ultramarines might be the best of the best, but they are renowned for their lack of sense of direction.
I'm liking the idea of an Inquisitor, and I definitely want an Assassin. Never had an army where that's been an option before, so Id be daft not to go for it really!
I've been looking at various army lists this morning, I might make one up and post it later for some C&C.
Oh yeah... the buying on impulse thing... that's the only way I spend money these days haha.
- my opponent had so few points left that he didn't even have a power weapon on his marine squad and got chewed out by a VSS with an evis (though it took most of the game).
Actually I don't often take eviscerators for my VSS, I made an exception for my lead squad this time because I knew my opponent was partial to lascannons and I was likely to end up walking. On the one hand it really helped, on the other it's kind of expensive.
