I'm currently designing a 1500 point Drop Pod Assault list to use for my Raven Guard (at some point, when I can secure the models). However, naturally, I can't fit everything I want in. I was wondering what the denizens of this forum thought about the two options I have:
A) 1 Sternguard w/ combi-weapon and 3 power weapons (two Tactical, one Sternguard)
B) 3 power fists (two Tactical, one Sternguard)
Is the extra model worth it? Is the extra kick in close combat worth it? I'm curious which I should roll with. I'm leaning towards the Sternguard, but I'm used to rolling with all power fists in my squads, so I'm not used to power weapons being included in my lists. There will be two other power fists already, in two other Tactical squads.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Well, personally I like power weapons for modeling purposes. Power axes and power swords look waaaaay cooler than a bunch of big hands. But on the other hand, the fists allow for some versatility- a wee bit of anti-tank, anti-zilla, T4 instant kill potential... the versatility of the extra strength added far outweighs 1 sternguard in terms of potential for reclaiming points. IMO of course.
It's a bit hard to say without seeing the rest of your list (for instance, if it was a 5 man sternguard squad i'd probably take A just to help ensure that squad has the bodies to make the points back) though.
Option A then, you should make it so that the sternguard can split into 2 squads. You just can't do that with 9 sternguard.
