Both of them are good for their point’s value.
Storm Troopers Yes - Deathstrike Missile Launcher No
Deathstrike Missile Launcher Yes - Storm Troopers No
Their both to expensive for what they do!
Most of you guys will have heard about the new codex and some of its units, the two I’d like to ask about is the new Storm Troopers the Deathstrike Missile Launcher.
For those of you who are unaware about these units in the new codex here’s a quick summary.
Storm Troopers can still deep strike and their weapon is AP3 however their now 16pts and their weapon is still strength 3 also no squad upgrades (I think).
Deathstrike Missile Launcher
When I first heard about this single Strength 10 AP 1 weapon with a 3+D3 radius template I was very excited because my current basilisk is converted to be a moving missile silo so it’s perfect for it. However I then find out that it can’t fire on the first turn and will only fire on a 6 on the 2nd turn getting lower with each turn but higher with every shaken, stunned and weapon destroyed result the vehicle takes and that’s quite a high risk factor of it not firing at all for something that’s 160pts.
My big question is, will they be worth their points? Because I want to start building the models so that when the codex comes out my army can hit the board straight away but I have serious doubts about whether they worth their points, the only reason I can think of to justify the risk of taking a Deathstrike Missile Launcher is that it will be one hell of a fire magnet.
But I thought I’d better ask you guys for your input on the matter.

well, depending on if its still rumor or confirmed rules; you'll most likely have to edit that post of all the stat and points numbers, just relate them to other weapons (ie stormtrooper guns are still the strength of a lasgun but now have the ap of a krak missile).
shrug, i think both will most likely end up more points than they're worth; though the stormtroopers have more of an ability to make their points worth i think. depending on what targets of opportunity they can get.
the deathstrike doesn't seem that big of a threat. 'one-shot only'? for the same points, a much better armored leman russ w/ battlecannon will produce more firepower and more threat every turn instead of the one chance turn that you're able to roll to fire. and since it'll most likely still be able to scatter, that one shot could always end up a complete wiff anyways.
for the stormtroopers, if they can catch heavy infantry in the open, then they'll be worth their grain of salt, otherwise cover saves will hurt them badly. with that, i'd probably go with sisters of battle if looking for some armored infantry. (which now fills me head with ideas of sticking SoB squads into my valkyries)
I think they are both excellent. The trick is they need to be properly used, and are not good against certain armies or have better, cheaper equivalents (Stormies versus orks...).
I will probably use a unit of stormtroopers just to completely obliterate a unit of space marines. Sure they'll die but they might make up their points cost. A nice scalpal unit to carve into the marines front lines.
If stormtroopers can benefit from the ROF 3 order then they would be pretty awesome for the volume of fire they can put out, however they are still wounding a T4 on a 5+, which is what everyone seems to forget when they scream AP3 OMGWTFBROKEN
However 8 hellguns and 2 plasmaguns with ROF 3 is some serious firepower and should turn a SM squad into the aether.
Deathstrike missile launch vehicle will in all probability be destroyed before they have a reliable chance to 'fire ze missiles!' (aka turn 3 when you need a 5+).
My reasoning for this is like so:
Come Turn 3 the reserves roll is a 3+, so if your enemy has any outflankers this is the turn in which they will mostly appear and blow the deathstrike chimera chassis to pieces. If you have first turn you need a 5 or so to fire the deathstrike missiles to begin with, so unless you have a miraculous power to summon 6's or 5's at will then the deathstrike is for you, if you have average luck and a smart opponent then the deathstrike will more often then not die before it even gets a shot off.
Come turn 4 the resreve is a 2+ and the deathstrike launch is a 4+ which is pretty good, however it's even better for that really delayed outflanker to show up and pop the side armor of the chimera chassis and probably penetrate and kill the vehicle....
If I was into artillery then I would probably take the Manticore instead, since it will have 2 turns of awesomeness pretty much guaranteed.
I would say the Stormtroopers are worth it but the Deathstrike i don't think so, about 160 points for something that may not even get to fire, even if it is ap its not worth it.
We who have seen war will never stop seeing it....In the silence of the night, we will always hear the screams....
They're both expensive for what they do, but I think Storm Troopers are the closest to being reasonably priced and somewhat reliable. The All-Storm Trooper army is dead, the new Storm Troopers are specialists that need to be used very carefully. Definitely mounted in either a Chim or a Valkyrie, they're good for blasting a heavy unit off an objective or ambushing an isolated unit. Give them some additional support and they're worthwhile.
For the cost of the Death Strike, I'd rather just have a Manticore that can fire off d3 large blasts per turn at the same high strength. It still has an element of randomness like the Death Strike, but far more reliable. And the ForgeWorld Manticore model is pretty cool, especially compared to the non-existent death strikes (and the conversions are also rather unbecoming).

The deathstrike, almost certainly not. By the time it is ready to fire, you'll be hitting your own objective takers. It is just too damned Orky.
As for Stormtroopers, my initial reaction is hell no. Maybe with the synergy of Valks and having them perform a specific role they will have a purpose, but it looks like they will still be hard-pressed by plasma vets for utility.
And they still can't bloody score.

Well, found a little info over at warseer that may make the deathstrike a little more viable

(cut the less important things out of the post.
(unless my basic math skills are off, diameter = radius*2 yes?)
So that is potentially a 12" blast, that ignores cover.
and do not forget the other small extra rumored rule
" Hits on vehicles in the area of the Deathstrike Missile are not calculated at half strength but at S10." So thats str 10 + 2d6 pick highest against every vehicle in that blast. And with a +1 on the damage chart (ap1)
And for those who have played apoc, and know the size of the 10" blast... well... yes
And the whole only fires on a 6, cannot fire first turn, and add +1 to the roll every turn is not so bad for a 8-12" blast that ignores cover
Turn 1 : may not fire
Turn 2 : May fire on a 6, (add +1 to roll) = 5+
Turn 3 : May fire on a 6, (add +2 to roll) = 4+
Turn 4 : May fire on a 6, (add +3 to roll) = 3+
Turn 5 : May fire on a 6, (add +4 to roll) = 2+
I will admit to it being slightly unreliable, but including 1 of these, maybe even two can be a cool and potentially devestating thing
All above stats and figures are still only rumors though, so it may suck really badly. If it does not ignore cover for an example, I would not take it.
There is no way I use a Deathstrike, not even if I get a model mounted and painted as a gift from a friend, the cost is to high.
Stormtroopers are fine, but I stick to veterans, so I can get more vehicles.
