As the new 'Guard codex rolls out, I've started an IG army and my usual opponent has started a Tyranid army. Specifically, a Nidzilla army (2 Hive Tyrants, 6 Carnifexes, mass Gaunts). I've read that this is one of the more dreaded opponents for the IG so I was looking at some pointers on taking on this beast.
Mass templates from Grenade and Missile Launchers in the Platoon Infantry Squads combined with Las fire should whittle down the Gaunts fairly easily I think. The problem comes from the 'fexes.
I'm hesitant to throw in a ton of Lascannons in HW Squads as these can be picked off pretty easily and are quite expensive for their points. Autocannons might be a slightly cheaper choice but I'm worried that they won't have quite enough stopping power.
So the other option that springs immediately to mind are Sniper Rifles. A couple of SW Squads (or Ratlings?) positioned in cover will probably not pin them, but those 4+'s to wound should add up.
Ordnance from Leman Russes and similar might work. But it might be too inaccurate and such large blast weapons are better suited to clearing gaunts. Lascannon sponsons could be used but that would be a waste of the Battle Cannon.
The only other thing I can think of are sacrificial SW Squads with Meltaguns, but these will only ever last one turn before being annihilated by anything within the 12" range. A bit of a points sink really.
So, fellow Imperial Guard commanders - what would you do?
Please, forgive my reaction, but: Hell no! Almost entire subforum society has been discussing that for more than 4 pages. The thread should some below... It was recently discussed, therefore I believe it's not hard to find it...
Rumor is there's an order called "Bring her down!" That makes all heavy weapons in the squad twin linked if fired at a monstrous creature or a vehicle. There is also an order that makes lasguns heavy 3 instead of rapidfire. Not sure if you can combine orders or not, but if you can....
My strategy for nidzilla is the same as my strategy for horde nidz. Kill it with fire. Boatload of gaunts? Kill it with fire. Bunch of monsters? Kill it with fire. A tyranid army will ONLY ever have 3 models that can't be wounded by lasguns. Thats +1 toughness carnys.
I throw sentinals at the gaunts in hand to hand. Gaunts can't hurt the sentinals unless they've got +1 str and even then they won't do much. That keeps them off your back for a few turns giving you plenty of time to kill tyrants and fex's.
Judging by the datasheet for the hydra autocannon it looks like its going to get 8 str 7 ap4 shots per turn. a squadron of 3 of those will go a long way towards killing monsters.
Basicaly, just shoot em. Shoot em alot.
I actually once took an army of nothing but lasguns against an army of nidzillas and won. My opponent agreed not to take toughness 7 fex's so that we could see how it went. It turned out pretty good.
Actually, the Hydra will have half as many shots as you say. It will be like an exterminator that ignores cover saves. That will be useful against warriors and the like, and nob bikers. I don't know for sure, but I heard it has a special targetting system that does that. So it can shoot down transports quite easily as well.
Man... I really want to comment on here but Dire is right.
I'll just say, ratlings, ratlings, manpower, manpower, manpower, common sense.
*edit, go to ground in cover vs the dakka fex! Most of them have toughness 6
