After recently coming back to 40k after a hefty 5 year break, im determined to build up a marine and promptly bought the DA and BT codexs as they appealed to me most. Now 2 weeks later i find they're worthless and the only thing that provided any relief from vanillamarines (who i despise incidently) comes from special characters (which i also despise)
simply put, is there anything else to provide variety now traits have gone?
you've got the free blood angels PDF too which you can get in the errata section of GWs site.
Failing that, it seems you might want to try a different army or actually give the new codex a try....
Variety? The whole of the 5th ed codex is full of it! You want infantry heavy army? Check! You want mechanised army? Check! You want a fast attack army? Check! You want a balanced army? Check! You want a dred heavy army? Check! You want a shooty army? Check! You want a close combat army? Check!
If thats not enough variety I have no idea what is and you should look for a different army!
What about trying a completely different race? SM have a lot of different builds, but they are all still all armored superhumans. What are you looking for from an army? Do you want something thats fun to paint and looks good? Something uber-competitive and killy? Tanks tanks and more tanks? Something that you'll get rolled over all the time with?
I can't speak for DA, but I know BT and normal SMs work like two different armies.
The play style is different, a lot of different units, different requirements, different rules.
The only things that remain the same are the basic stat-lines, but you'll find those vary little from army to army.
So I'm not entirely sure what you're complaining about, since there is a ton of variety between these different armies. If these codices didn't entice you with enough difference, I don't think trying a new race will solve it, sounds like you need a new system. Maybe try WHFB, it's got a lot more emphasis on playstyle and strategy.
well im planning on sticking with space marines as i already have a large selection of models including expensive (cash-wise) items like landraiders/terninators etc and i think its the army i could be most creative with when it comes to the fluff since thats a huge draw for me.
i started this thread to try and establish whether there was any variety between chapters as was previously the case with traits without needing special characters or 1st founding legions rather than different combinations of minutures
sorry if that sounds a little pissy i assure you its not
Hey sorry, my bad. I guess my response sounded a bit harsh.
Basically, the special armies do rely on just combination of troops or special characters.
It kind of sucks for anyone who isn't BA, DA, BT or SW but that's something only GW can control.
Out of curiosity, what kind of army are you looking for? Like do you know a chapter you want to play, or are you looking for a certain play style?
i played with BT recently and thought they werent too bad and plyatesting a DA deathwing/ravenwing army this weekend to see how they step up.
the other theme that appealed to me was that of a chapter specialising in covert ops (actually had this planned out fairly well with the old traits with rules like tac squads infitrating etc) which interested me since reading the horus heresy novel Legion.
heard thats the forte of the raven gaurd too but trying to avoid named chapters if possible
