I was wondering if heavy bolters, are being replaced, in favor of missile launchers?
Reading these boards, and going to games, I am getting the feeling they are.
I have 4 tactical squads, and I was planning on taking 2 HBs and 2 MLs. Though, before I do, I wanted to ask this question.
I thank you in advance.
I like 'em both. The ML took a hit in value with the new glancing hit rules so it really seems to fall into the jack of all, master of none role now. I do prefer it for hordes with 6+ armor saves, but other than that it's only good for it's versatility and low cost (not that those are bad in the slightest.) I keep a HB as well since it's better at taking out medium infantry, and can go for some lucky shots on AV10 vehicles.
'course, I spend more time painting than I do playing, so don't go considering this a voice of experience. Part of the reason I like HBs is the model is nice.
You play your game, I'll play mine.
I'd be tempted to go missile launcher with all of them. Good versatility and free!
For my tac squads I've made extra guys with each of the special weapons and heavy weapons so I can swap and change as I feel or the mission dictates. I do tend to play campaigns alot so this is helpful.
I play Black Templars so my experience may differ.
I began with Heavy Bolters in my shooting squads then I replaced them with Missile Launchers because I thought I didn't have enough AT.
But after I played a few games I found the versatility wasn't really that handy since the Krak wasn't effective vs armour and the Frag was either off target or easily armour saved.
So I have gone back to HB's because the game effectiveness is the same for me, but I like my HB conversions and it makes me happy to use models I like!
I know its a generic response but it depends what else you've got. I use Attack Bikes for AT work which leaves my infantry to happily machine gun enemy infantry.

im not a massive fan of either dont think i ever used a heavy bolter more then a handful of times (maybe cos i havnt been bothered to paint mine). I tend to leave my missiles in the dev squad so i can fit las-c's in tac squads (its cheaper that way) dont think the heavy bolter does enough damage to be worth it compared to i dont know a flamer or just keeping the bleeding bolter. Plus against horde armys missiles really slow the game down as they horde has to scatter to make it less clumped giving you advantage except mopre thinking time during their turn. Anyway i seem to have just rambolled out a paragraph without answering a question so ill say that neither are any worse then they where before but people use them less because all the weps that were expensive before are now the price that the missile and heavy B were before so people have just replaced them with better but similarly priced guns instead of going for the cheap gun after all cheap and cheerful isnt really the space marine way.
Yes, Heavy Bolters are increasingly being replaced by Missile Launchers because the later can do the anti-horde jobs just as well plus a lot more. Another trend is to have Multi-Meltas in Tactical Squads because of the tougher rules in 5th Edition in favor of tanks.
I have 4 Tactical Squads; two with Missile Launchers to stay in the back and two with Multi-Meltas for "close combat".

yeah ive started tooling up a melta squad for charging forward blasting then punching too
They're both free, so it's a matter of preference. I like missile launchers because they can threaten vehicles as well as infantry. HBs mess up infantry more consistently, but don't do squat to armor.
