i'm thinking of starting Space Marines, but i don't know what chapter yet, got any suggestions? something with a lot of assault troops and heavy weapons.
Heavy weapons are pretty much available all the same to all chapters, so thats not a problem
Assault, well, you've got a couple of options. The standard Marine Codex (with the right special characters) can field 3 assault marine squads, and 6 squads of marine bikers (or just 9 squads of bikers) in a single army/FOC, which you can imagine is pretty damn devistating. The other option is Blood Angels - Their codex is free to download from GW's errata section on their website, and can field up to 14 assault marine squads (or varients of) in a single army/FOC - just plane nasty.
There is the Dark Angels codex with their Ravenwing/Deathwing, but i've never even seen DA's played 'assaulty', so wouldnt be able to comment.
Failing that, try orks
Blood angels have alot of assault troops, but they're just a mini codex anyway. I'd say make your own chapter, it's as easy as finding a paint scheme you like, making up a chapter history and playing with them.
Create flames for a galaxy and it will be warm. Put a galaxy in flames and it will be warm for the rest of it's existence.
If you want a pure assaulty army, in jump packs, Blood Angels are the ONLY way to go!! You can also back up those assault troops with lots of heavy weapons in your devastator squads or with tactical squads. That is everything AsuryansChosen is asking for!
"In memory of Sanguinius!!"
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Here's a good link that I haven't looked at in a while, but I remember it being very, very helpful concerning which Codex Chapters best exemplify shooty/assaulty/balancedy.
Jumpers? Blood Angels are pretty ace in that field. As far as heavy, yea I second I think most seem to be balanced on that one...?
Pain is an illusion of the senses, despair an illusion of the mind.
Welcome to the space marines. Assuming you want an assault heavy list, you would do well, as many have said, to peruse the various codexes and see what fits your ideas best.
Also, if you have a friend who has armies, you might want to borrow them and play some practice games to see how units play overall. You might find that assaults aren't your thing, or you might refine your strategy that changes your list. And few things suck more than building a list, then realizing it doesn't play how you want it to.
Blood Angels are indeed one of the most assaulty SM chapters out there, but they're expensive you pay for a death company with damn near every squad. I quit playing them just because I didn't play enough to use them often and sold them to friend who now plays DH & SW because he couldn't win a game with em'
Which brings me to my next point SW or space wolves are a very assaulty army, 14 points for a basic marine with 4 attacks on the charge!!! Because their codex is rather outdated not to many people play them first of all and second you can still steal from the regular SM codex (making them broken if you ask me)
For Dark angels there isn't much, you just have to know how to use them in order to work them to a competative army. Deathwing would settle both your needs though its a roughly $250 USD for a 1500 point army, and you can have 3 lightning claws 2 Thunder hammers and one LC can have a cyclone missle launcher. 18 ignore armour save attacks baby! (I'm bias being a dark angels player)
Now with flat out regular SM Ravenguard, White Scars, and to some degree the Salamaders are rather assaulty. Just depends on which you prefer really.
Then again as a friend always told me just find an army witha color scheme you'd enjoy painting and go from there.
