Which would you rather field, a squad of 2 hydras or a LR Exterminator?
For the same cost in points, their armament is nearly identical; is AV 14 worth losing a third of your range and allowing skimmers to get cover saves? Is it better to be more resistant to immobilized or more resistant to weapon destroyed results?
I am quite perplexed myself.
Similar issues arise when comparing the Eradicator to the Colossus (or hell hound) or the Vanquisher to the Medusa though not to the same degree...
It seems our new heavy support choices are stepping on each other's toes.
Hydras are great and as a pair have more than twice the firepower with the extra cover save rule thrown in for free. Their armour however is poor but you get two AV12 tanks compares to a single AV14 russ. Hydras become vulnerable to more weapons (S6 & 7) but with the redundancy of an extra tank and the ability to double your firepower in the early turns I think hydras are far better.
Compare 1 Hydra to an armoured sentinel with an autocannon and see the extra stuff you get for a handfull of extra points.

I'll go for the LMR initially anyway. Only due to me already having one and I do like the feeling of it. The Hydras have I yet to come to terms with from an aestetical point of view.
But as a general rule of thumb, and as far as efficiency goes, the two hydras might well be the better option.
Exterminator for 170 points gives you AV14 with 2TL ACs and 3HBs
Hydra for 150 points gives you 4 TL Long-ACs, 2HBs w/ the bonus ability
It is kinda a Tank vs. Glass Cannon idea here, but the Hydra being two AV12 hulls is probably no actually less surviviable...
Exterminator for 190 points gives you AV14 with 2TL ACs, 1 HB and 2 Plasma Cannons
Hydra for 225 points gives you 6 TL Long-ACs, 3Hb w/ the bonus ability
That is 7 anti-infantry dice and two plasma blasts vs. 21 anti-infantry dice...
Yeah... GW is printing money again with the Hydra.
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Hydras are the more effective option, as long as your list has some other battle tanks (armor 14) to draw some firepower away from them. Exterminators were stupidly priced. They used to be 120 pts plus upgrades, now they cost the same as a Russ for only 2 extra autocannon shots. Lame. Overcosted by something like 20 points.

I agree with Sokhar, the Exterminator is overpriced and the Hydra must to work combined with Leman Russ. The real Reason d` etre of the Exterminator was to allow a tank to fire turret, hull and sponsons weapons simultaneusly in a single fire phase, that make it equal in firepower to a Battle Tank "before" the "Lumbering Behemoth" rule. In my humble opinion stats alone dont measure well the potential without include in to consideration the new rules of both tanks.
Exterminator = 7 shoots + top armor + Lumbering Behemoth (move 6" fire 7 shoots)
2x Hydras = 7 shoots + numbers + Auto-targeting System (cancel cover save of Flat Out & Turbo Bosting)
With + 20pts options:
Exterminator w/ sponsons = 13 shoots + top armor + Lumbering Behemoth (move 6" fire 7 shoots) + not destroyed if inmobilized
2x Hydras w/ Heavy Stubbers = 13 shoots + numbers + Auto-targeting System (cancel cover save of Flat Out & Turbo Bosting against) + Defensive Weapons (move 6" fire 10 shoots) - destroyed if inmobilized
Now, we can upgrade more the Exterminaror with Heavy Stubber, Lascannon and Plasmas. But then maybe we just can buy a Battle Tank or another variant.
In my opinion, the only way where the Hydra can be deployed with out using Leman Russ as Fire Magnets is against the Eldar or Dark Eldar. Because the "Lance" rule, make the top armor completly useless.
