I highly admire Marneus Calgar's personal transport (page 123 codex, better shown on page 53 of the seemingly outdated "how to paint space marines' book- which i hope they uddate as it is a true inspiration) and would like to try to imitate the uberly personalized landraider, (not quite sure yet which type i'll get but my fluff pulls me towards the original) but in my DIY chapter's viking theme (which revolves around Thor). I'm thinking maybe it's a forge world or special edition model, and either way i would greatly appreciate tips/ thoughts on how/what to do to make it a one-of-a-kind model. Also, thoughts on LR types would be more than welcome.
Awesome idea. After looking at it, I think its a custom job.
If you compare it to the other LRs on the page, you can see that the side panels are built up. Looks like all the various cracks, footsteps were filled in with green stuff (and also the angle piece that joins the top and side was extended/jointed with greenstuff) . Then around the edges, plasticard was used to line and make the gold edging. More card was used to make the arches and hald round plastic tubing used for the columns. The artwork was painted on the inside with a fine brush. (you could probably use a transfer with multicolors or just use a black transfer and then highlight with grey using a very fine detail brush. Lascannon barrells had the gold leaf painted on.
The front hatch looks like the ridges were shaved/sanded down. Then a coat of greenstuff was applied over it and the brick pattern was pressed in.
The writing on the front side panel may have been a transfer with a light drybrush over the top to blend it.
I hope this helps. I'd love to hear your thoughts on my observations, and what you are thinking for a viking interpretation of it.
MC Bone Giant- Thanks for the haste- i didn't expect anyone to answer so soon, nor so well. As an amateur in the hobby, i didn't even think about any of the plasticard options, nor the thorough use of green stuff. After re-inspecting the pictures, i noticed that there isn't even evidence of the side doors ever being there- again i'm clueless. My DIY chapter is based on the chapter master being based on Thor of Norse Legend, who rode in his chariot, which reputedly scorched the earth and cracked the mountains as Thor rode. Due to Thor being the god of thunder, it seems only fitting to make his chariot have lascannon sponsons, though my Chapter Master has no ranged weapon and so needs a transport that not only can get him there in one peice, but can disorient and thin the surrounders before he strikes. As for my ideas, im still undecided, though im studying up for inspiration. A few ideas i do have are: incorporating his messenger/servant (probably carrying something of value, not sure yet) and his sister somehow onto the top (if it doesn't get in chronus's way) as well as perhaps putting a dragonhead at the front somehow/somewhere to imitate a long boat. I know i'm ranting on and on but maybe someone will like an idea and try it or add on- either would be awesome. I'll post again when i get some solid inspiration.

I like this idea. I think a great centrepiece is really good for an army, and a Land Raider makes a pretty decent one!
One thing you might want to do is look at Forge World's range of Land Raider Doors and hatches. I know they're quite expensive, and they probably won't have something like what you're looking for, but they might have something you can base your designs or use as a foundation for your work.
I think the Lascannons are the most appropriate weapon you can get, but then again I'm not all that familiar with Land Raider Variants. Isn't there one that has Heavy Flamers in the sponsons, or is that Apocalypse only?
I can imagine you'd also want to cover (or at least adorn) it with lightning bolts.
Hmm. I think you're more up to speed with your Norse mythology than I am, so maybe I'll leave the rest of the ideas up to you. Good luck!
I agree using lascannon sponsons for something that is might be related to lightning and thunder (Thor is thunder-based right?). That's because lascannons fire a form of energy instead of a projectile or gas based attack. The Redeemer's super heavy sponson while awesome in concept, may not be what you're looking for.
While you're looking at the Forge World site, take a look at the Land Raider Psycannons option, the sponsons look nice and probably have more room for customization than just 'standard' lascannons.
After a little bit of searching I found this.
It’s an older LO post from '07
You may want to look into some of the Salamander stuff, with their preclivity for thunder hammers. Roll you lord in with a custom thunder hammer, made to look like a long handled Thor's hammer. Even have a shield at his side.
If you have artistic talent, or know someone who has, you could have them sketch up some artwork with black pen, scan it, then print it on transfer paper for the side panels. You could integrate some norse mythology/imagery in there. (Thor with his hammer smiting a dragon, halls of vahalla, forked lightning, viking ship with thor riding atop the prow.
Whoah, didn't expect so much feedback. All good ideas which i'll consider, though painting models with detail is the epitome of my artistic abilities, so painting a scene may prove difficult/terrible for me I forgot to mention that my commander (who apparently has to be lysander's model as im using his stats) will have a custom made hammer which will be short handled as the original was said to be (im lucky enough to have a machinist for a dad =) ) I mentioned the argument about having to use the model in another thread (Advice?) but as it's now part of this evolving one, i'll leave it open as well as it's now more or less about viking customization. I do have one question for firaya, which is whether or not i can use psycannons legally as they're no part of the standard SM codex (or if i'd just say their lascannons but use them for customizability). im thinking on using a scandinavian version of a celtic shield knot for somewhere. As a final note, i'd quite like to get all of your thoughts on which chapter should be the second founding father of my chapter (the first being space wolves, duh ) THanks for all the effort in researching and i'll for sure read everything many times over.
