Currently I play imperial guard, when I first started out I really wanted to go DH but didnt have the cash, I just came into 200 bucks so im looking to now get some DHs especially because I can use my existing models from imp guard as well.
What should I buy to start? I borrowed the Codex but im still totally lost as to what I should get.
Pick up Power Armoured Grey Knights as they are awesome. But you'll want to pick up more than just a box, you'll want to pick up some blisters of them too as squads of about 7-8 seem to hold up best in battle.
Be sure to pick up GK Termies too... they rock! I tend to run 3 squads of em plus a retinue of 4 in large enough games.
Take your time, don't just leap into it and be sure to read, read, read about them and make sure to also ask questions.
Right now im playing with a bunch of friends at around 500 - 1000 points, I currently have 10 storm troopers in my imp guard I can use as inquisitorial storm troopers, I was thinking of buying the box of GK Termies and a box or two of regular Grey Knights in power armor which I think is a tad over 500 points.
But at the same time I want to use an assassin which requires I use an inquisitor/Inquisitor Lord
Welcome to the Inquisition,
Name tags are here and Hammer are in the closet just down the hall.
Now Grey Knights are rock hard troops but very costly troops. great models and great fluff....but rather costly point wise. Start small and play a lot. Grey Knights take a bit of learning but once you get the hang of them, they are a great addition to any army or by themselves. Also read Number 6's Inq tactical musings. They will really help your game. and don't forget incinerators are great for BBQ's and other large gatherings in 5th edition .
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, “You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.
I roll with pure GKs, thats why I was offering up reading alot and asking around as my exp. with other forces of the Inquisition are rather limited to massacreing a friends Callidus Assassins with my Khorne 'Zerkers everytime he drops her out on the table =)
Power-armoured Grey Knights or a couple of GKTs in a Guard army are the way to go, though. I got a bit of a look at the new IG Codex while I was out shopping yesterday and it looks pretty intimidating
I should have probably mentioned that I mainly play against Orks (one guy rushes in with truks, the other has def koptas) and a Necron (at 500 points he just uses warriors and scarabs)
Orks would be bolter spam then. 2 boxs and 4 blisters of Grey Knights will give you two squads of 8 (9 if you want to include the incinerator). That will give you a nice solid 32 storm bolter shots per turn. If you like them then get some Grey Knight Terminators, 5 will do.
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
You need incinerators against Orks. It also works well against the scarabs. I believe the NFW of your GK's will Insta-kill the T3 scarabs.
That said, games under 1000 pts are particularly difficult for the DH, as so many of our most effective options are quite costly. Well-rounded 500 pt armies are a nigh impossibility. However, if most of your games at these points levels are Necrons and Orks ... you're in luck! It's almost like Grey Knights are the Necrons' worst nightmare (I have yet to lose a single game against them), and Grey Knights -- with a bit of cautious tactical acumen -- are more than capable of standing up to Orks quite well, too.
The reason is because GKs are 40K's premier anti-infantry units, and Necrons are an all-infantry force at low points levels. You can both out-shoot and out-assault this army. Pick them apart at your leisure. And as inexpensive as Orks are, they still can't field any of their truly awful power-combos at such points levels. Stormbolters tear up Boyz squads in a hurry, and if you get the timing down, you can have them thinned down just in time for you to clean them up in an assault.
Against these foes, at just 500 pts, I would recommend the following
[91 pts] BC, psycannon
[202 pts] 7 Grey Knights, targeter, frags
[202 pts] 7 Grey Knights, targeter, frags
Total: 495 pts
Plenty of firepower and assault power to handle infantry and light vehicles. This army will struggle against extremely fast/mobile foes like Tau and Eldar, but if you're not facing them much, I wouldn't worry about it.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
