I'm looking to get back into 40k after years and years off...
And I'm looking to start from scratch.
I've been reading the threads here, and searching around a lot,
and I've decided I want to put together a Space Marine army -
but I have a few questions, and I could use your help.
If you help me out below, I will pick my favorite army within
the next week... Go out, and put it together.
So you get to help out someone getting back into this hobby,
PLUS I'll even buy, build and play-test your idea for you.
(so you can see how your ideas stack up, without
having to drop the money or time on the models)
OK, lets get down to business:
1) I'm looking to put together an army for 500 to 1500 points
One that could be fielded as both 500 and 1500 would
be best, I think, because of #2, below:
2) I want to keep the model count low as possible
I enjoy taking the time to paint and care for individual models,
but I don't have an amazing amount of time to set aside.
So, rather than field a shoddy army, I like the idea of giving
each and every unit its own character and life... And having
a handful of badasses
3) I've got three preferences:
* I really like the idea of Terminators.
* I like the look and feel of Dark Angels
This lead me to think about going the Deathwing route,
but I don't know if this is best... Since I hear they get
eaten alive pretty bad by bigger armies.
AND I'm not stuck on Dark Angels, either. So feel
free to step in with an army from any codex, or
* I like the idea of big weapons and shooting, versus close combat.
Nothing against close combat per se, but
I think missile launchers are cooler
than powerfists, as a rule of thumb
* I don't want any vehicles.
None. Don't want to bother with the rules or the bulk.
Maybe down the line, once the points value goes up,
maybe... But for now, not looking for it.
So, What Can You Come Up With?
Be creative, have fun with it.
Worst case scenario -- You get to see a whole bunch
of cool list ideas, and then I'll post a bought, built
and painted army when I finally rake it all together.
(buying and building are the simple parts )
Thanks in advance

Oh, dang, I gotta sit down for this one...
Hmm, would you count a dreadnought for a vehicle?
I know they are mostly CC focussed, but they can be wrangled to have good shooty options if need be and 5-man terminator squads can have two assault cannons. Anywho, I collect BT, dont game much, mostly collect, convert, paint and fluff (those Dark Angels will pay...).
I also collect a little Tau. I know they are not the most popular choice, but they are very shooty, although tanks are considered a must for them.
In summary, I have probably just given you two armies NOT to collect,

I'd stick with the deathwing if it were me. Yes they have trouble beating orks but if you know how to play them (I know your new) against sed armies you can draw or win every game.
@ Dark_Templar: I was looking through a couple of games workshop articles with Black Templars outfitted with SICK iconography and customization stuff. If only because of those models alone, I would for sure consider a Black Templar army.
@ girlhunter202: Thanks for the advice. I'm really liking the colors on them. Would you suggest doing a mix between reg Dark Angels and Deathwing?
Space Wolves. You can potentially have a pack of 20 terminators retinue plus the terminator armoured wolf lord. to top it off, for every 3 terminators in that squad, you're allowed a cyclone missile launcher. think of the possibilities.
There it is, low model count army.
While wolf guard would cost a bit more than normal terminators after you equip them (hence the low model count), they are also better, so those points actually go somewhere.
That sounds pretty badass. I haven't seen a lot of Space Wolf love around here, when I went looking.
Anyone play them much and want to comment?
I used to play space wolves and recently sold my codex to a friend who was getting into them.
Wolf guard bodyguard in large units would prove devastating to enemies. Just remember that they probobly won't be devastating enough to eaarn their points back. In 1500 points you will need 2 space wolf HQ's so you can take a wolf priest with healing potions and balms, this will give you a terminator unit with feel no pain! Also space wolves get termie armour rediculously cheap, termie armour for them costs as much as melta bombs for normal marines.
Wolf scouts are very characterful and fill the Bad Arseness you wanted to get into your army. Coming on from your opponents board edge with melta weapons is pretty fun too.
Grey Hunters are armed with bolters and ccw's so they can shoot and then use their bolters as bolt pistols when combat rolls around, no charge bonuse though .
Long Fangs are like devie squads only they can fire at whatever they want, finally mixed weapon squads are useful.
Blood Claws are just plain all kinds of awesome. These guys however need the charge to become effective.
The space wolves are the only chapter with access to leman russ tanks, i no you said no vehicles but come on...
The space wolves also have a ton of extra special rules and different weapon options you can explore.

Wow, thanks for the info. Already, I can tell everyone on here is very helpful, and you've got some great insights to share. I really appreciate it
(the scouts sound like a blast)
Space Wolves and Deathwings are sounding pretty badass at the moment. However, the Dark Angels robes are way too awesome to leave on the wayside if I went full Deathwing. Any input on this?

Space Wolves: Beware of catching rabies and/or fleas
Dark Angels: Beware of being consumed by the pull of Chaos...dirty traitors
In regards to your HQ choice, I believe a Commander who underwent the Emperor's Sex-Change Operation would be interesting.
