i apologize if this was previously addressed, but im starting guard now and im wondering:
ratlings (aside from opinions on the models and fluff)
are they worth taking?
I'm sure this has been brought up a number of times if you hit the 'search' button, but maybe it's a sign for a topic of the week? I've looked in the TofW index and can't see a 'Ratlings' link, so maybe this could be the next topic, as it seems from the 'Similar Threads' option that other people have similar queries?...
If you've got the points they're pretty good. Much easier to make run away now since they lost their special rule, but they're still great for taking on MCs with. Also I imagine it'd be a good combo to use them in conjunction with a battle psyker squad to make sure a high priority target gets pinned. There's more options now for MC fighting though, like bring it down +autocannon squad.
Fantastic units brilliant for popping down monstorous creatures and being a real pain in the neck to infantry... i always take atleast one squad. worth there wait in gold if u ask me.
Personally I don't like them.. even though they'r one of the few units with access to infiltration in the new codex..
Their problem is that whatever they'r good at other units are better at.. As for pinning purposes I'd much rather go with barrages.. So much artillery, and even cheap mortars now.. And anti-MC there's also many other ways.. Veterans with plasmaguns 'bringing it down' for instance..
Finally as jh316 said.. they'r also so much more likely to run away/out of cover now..
Well... yes. Of course they're a support unit. Being a support unit isn't a bad thing, they're needed. It's like saying "Well, a basilisk can deal some damage, but I find them more as a support unit than anything else." Sure, neither ratlings nor basilisks can go take on the enemies by themselves, but they'll still ruin someone's day if used right.
i've never used them but usually i just take the light infantry doctrine and go with Cadian Snipers.
We who have seen war will never stop seeing it....In the silence of the night, we will always hear the screams....
All I can say is I love my Ratlings, they have killed many a very expensive unit, much to my enemies disdain. They are usually one of the biggest fire magnets in my matches, and they are very very squishy, hence they need a fair amount of protection in the form of Infantry meatshields usually however if you want to keep them alive!
I think its worth it though. For me they've managed to kill Carnifex's on Turn 1. And bring an Avatar down to its last wound on a single volley, which then promptly fell to barrage of rapidfire lasguns, good times!
