I am looking to take an IL, as a second HQ choice, for my SM force. This is so I can bring along a Vindicare.
That being said, I would like the IL/retinue to be long range fire support. I am thinking of two sages, and two mystics, but stuck at that.
Thanks in advance.
Inquisitor Lord with a psycannon, three heavy weapon servitors, two Sages and two Mystics is the standard load-out. You may want to throw a few cheap wound models in there as well to stop your Mystics dying, because as long as at least 2 of them are alive you can nominate any nearby squad to open fire on any Deep Strikers the moment they appear (i.e they allow you to shoot during your opponent's Movement phase, which is awesome). You could also put in some Acolytes with combi-weapons, but that might be overkill.
=][= lord - psycannon
3 x warriors - 1 x plasma cannon - 2x heavy bolters OR 3 x Heavy bolters
2 x sages
1 x mystic
3 x acolytes - bolters OR plasma guns
3 x familiars
Pros - Lots of wounds, never runs away, lots of fire power
Cons - fully tooled out runs expensive, around 250pts, MUST STAY OUT OF CC!!!!
Hope it helps. Can always knock off the familiars and acolytes if you need to save points.
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
Also, one of the best kept secrets in the DH army...something I always get for my IL or Inq - the Emperor's Tarot. For only 15pts, it's well worth it to try to get 1st turn for most missions and against most armies.
A couple of points for an auspex can discourage inflitrators too. May never get used but it's practically free.
If you take the bolter acolytes you can give them one each and spread the carriers around to get a significant infiltrate-and-die zone.
I occasionally use the following to protect my precious vehicles (Land Raider, especially) from those awful 1st Turn Space Marine Drop Pod Melta units.
Inquisitor - Combi-Plasma
3 Veteran Guard - Plasma Guns
Acolytes as desired
Now that our FAQ has clarified we can fire at units disembarking from a Drop Pod with the free shots given to use by the Mystic.. those chucklehead Loyalists armies with their insufferable Melta Drop Pod units will think twice before approaching my Land Raider on the first turn. The unit is fairly cheap, and opens access to use of Assassins. Like jy2 said, the Emperors Tarot is never a bad idea as well.
2H - LEGIO HYDRA
It's definitely a cheap alternative, but 24" plasma guns don't really take full advantage of the free shots in my mind. They don't hit as hard but the servitor weapons and psycannon can pretty much cover the entire tabletop and make the free shots much more difficult to avoid.
I've not used the cheap Veterans option, the plasma cannon is superb as it is.
I use a typical loadout like others have recommended:
Inq. Lord w/psycannon
1Plasma Cannon Servitor
2 sages (for the re-roll on 'gets hot')
I park them in cover, typically in the center of my lines, with good fire lanes. I ask my opponent if he has any Deep Strikers, and then remind him of what Mystics CAN do.
it's an average of 14" sight, but I use the squad as a frighteningly potent firebase. With Targeters on the servitors, it can make for easier choices to fire at.
I've used this unit allied to IG before, parked between 2 Demolishers. That was a rude awakening to the Deep Strike unit....

Lots of great replies on this one, Auspex always works - thanks for bringing that one up A.T. With the rise of double lash (and the persistence of the eldar) I also typically put a Psychic hood on my =][= when running him as a lord.
I typically don't run acolytes and come in south of 225. I have considered running them in apoc games.
Several follow ups:
I don't think the acolytes can take advantage of Plasma Guns as it is not listed in the DH Armory. You could do a Plasma Pistol or a combi-plasma or a combi-melta on an acolyte...
Someone had pointed out that weapons that only reach 24" range weren't a good combination for the mystics or the auspex, but 24" is the max spotting range for the auspex and the mystics. It doesn't matter if the weapon shoots 96" - you can only spot out to 24".
jy2 had mentioned using the Tarot to go first - my typical play is to try to go second...are you saying you want to win the roll so you can go second, or do you usually go first? If so, what advantages do you find from going first?
