Welcome to Librarium Online!
The space marine player in our group is having birthday soon. I think of buying him a chaplain, bedcause he doesn't reallt like the captain. He joined us only half a year ago and after he had seen what my necorn lord can be equipped with, he dismissed the normal captain. And because we are two guys who can split the cost, we are considering buying him a rhino as well. What is your opinion on this? Is a rhino and an chaplain good units to use for a newbeginner?
The rhino is, and i would say that the chaplain is too. He is a quite easy to use unit, and effective too. Especialy if you advice him to fit him with a jump pack. So yeah, i think it's a quite good gift.

Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Sounds like good choices to me.
Maybe a squad, to go with the rhino?
I don't know, what level of "beginner" your friend is, but maybe you should consider the Assault on Black Reach set?
Your friend shouldn't have dismissed the captain so soon. With the addition of Hellfire Rounds, my captain is really turning into a killer. Not we least forget, a scout squad can have a heavy bolter with Hellfire Shells.
Happy Birthday, to your friend, from me.
It sound like he doesn't have the Chaplain or the Rhino yet? He will surely want them eventually, if not much sooner He is lucky to have friends like you guys!
I think it depends on what else your Space Marine player has in his army. Obviously, a Rhino would be a poor choice if he already has three Rhinos in the list, but no Predator... etc. Do you have a list of the other models he has?
A Chaplain is definitely a good model for beginners and veterans alike. I would personally suggest the Chaplain with Jump Pack model instead of a Terminator or regular Chaplain; most often are Chaplains run with Assault Squads, at least that I see, and the model is a great one.
i use my chaplain indeed in my assault squad, can kick some serious butt when they deepstrike behind enemy lines where all his ranged is, either that, or it forces my opponent to keep an unit or 2 in the back ^^
so yeah, if he has an assault squad, give him a chaplain + jumppack
MEAT IS MURDER, And murder tastes pretty good! :D
When we met at school,we were two who had worked with warhammer since earlier. He liked the concept and wanted to start space marines. The other guy, who i will most likely share the cost with, bought the black reach box, mostly for the rulebook and small thingies. He also had serious problems with choosing an army, and builded an small space marine army befor he decided to go with the imperial guard. So, he's bought the assault on black reach spacies, and between 4 combat squads of normal marines and 5 assault marines from the imperial guard player.
So, thats 3 tactical marines squads, one dreadnought, 1 assault marine squads, one captain and some termies. We want to encourage him into using his tactical squads, because he always ends up using 2 combat scuads and proxying the rest as something else.
From what your friend has in his army, a Chaplain with a Jump Pack would be a great addition to lead that Assault Squad.
To encourage use of Tactical Squads, I would definitely say a Rhino or Razorback (combat squads for the win) would be a great bet, or a Drop Pod, as they would both greatly increase his Tactical Squads' flexibility.
Either that or get your friend to discuss Tactical Squads with me, as I am firmly convinced that they are a definite choice for any clever Marine player.
