So the armour worn by the Cadians; was it used during the Great Crusade/Heresy period?
The same goes for other equipment, I realise that Plasma weaponary was early stages and the Imperial Army used Rhinos and Land Raiders. But what about Sentinals, Valkaries? Commisars, Oygrns!!..... ?
I've decided to begin anew with guard with the new codex and am wondering what I can/should do to make the force come across as Warhammer 30K!
The Imperial Army was less standardized since it essentially consisted on whatever the local planet could throw together most of the time. Much like the Imperial Guard of course, except without the Munitorum to equip them. So the answer is probably whatever you like.
I would envisage the armour being a bit more bulky and I believe they would have had more auto guns and solid slug weaponry as well.
It's worth a krak!
The vehicles may or may not have existed in their current form, however similar vehicles probably did at least. A Valkyrie is just a flying transport, a sentinel is a walker with a gun. Ogryns can be found all over the galaxy for some reason so they were probably around too.
I believe Commissars might have been a post-heresy idea though.
Yeah, I guess the troop types would all be there apart from Priests and Commisars as they are both based on supporting the Imperial Creed with the Emperor as a God. But then I can imagine their being a Commisar equivilent.
I remember seeing Imperial Army Troops on Jet bikes in the Rogue Trader days along with walkers (or was it just robots) in the book.
I thought they had better technology back then, not worse. Wouldn't anything that exists in 40k exist in 30k as well, technology wise? The Imperium's knowledge has atrophied.
One of the things you probably would not have seen is psykers. Since the emperor banned any use of warp related powers before the heresy even began. Likewise you wouldn't have priests. Although you could use the argument that they were iterators. So priests of the Imperial creed--> IE: there are no gods and we should all look for the betterment of man and science.

I'll probably add my own two cents into this
If your looking at say model wise, there have been old sentinel models lying around and that most of the infantry would use already mentioned autoguns and solid slug weapons.
As for possibility of fluff wise, Priests would probably exist but not for the reasons of the fluff today. During the Horus Heresy remember that before the Warmaster was killed, the Emperor lived so Priests wouldn't really be there but doesn't mean they couldn't worship other gods, or the Emperor himself as a worthy aspect of the universe.
As for the Imperial Creed characters liek Commissars, I'm not sure they would exist at the time, seeing that the Imperium was built until correct me if I'm absolutely wrong but after Robuille Guileman (spellcheck please ) made the Codex Astartes.
But as everyone has mentioned its pretty much anything that world could muster in time. Plus we can put it like this, how i always put it when it comes to fluff, its an empty void of millions of years, put your imagination too it, and you'd make a very plausible story.
I honestly believe that walkers existed, the valkyre was some sort of bulky prototype, and that the Imperial Army was a vast bunch of men and women who were rallied up by the Space Marine Legions to fight for them.
"DID WE JUST SIGN UP FOR A SUICIDE MISSION, RICO?" "YEAH WE JUST DID, WHEN WE ENLISTED" LOVE THE IMPERIAL GUARD, JOIN TODAY!!
Although they're weren't priests i could see using them simply as warriors in some of the more primitive armies. But yes back then there were a lot higher tech including squadrons of jet bikes and speeders.
