Today i played my second, third and fourth game in total.
I fielded a 500p Space Marine group going with a dreadnought, 7 scouts a 10man tactical squad and a Imperial Guard troop (friend of mine, hasn't got the points yet so we co-played things)
We met the green tide, 711p of the ork menace.. just footsloggin ahead towards us.
We also tried the three different missions with the three different set ups.
And i must say, i am not becoming fond of the tactical marine bolter fire.. Rapid Fire is a setback.. at least for how we played today.. not being able to move and assault really put a stone in the wheel.
I did like it when they entered melee tho, they got assaulted by 7 nobs and stood their ground and slowly killed them off (the 3+ armor save is a saver!). Even tho nobs threw out 4 attacks/base they won.. and i seem to like melee far more then shooting.. both scouts and the tactical squad (fitted with heavy bolter in two battles and a missile launcher in the last)
So my quest continues to find the right path. Reading along it seems like Black Templars is a melee oriented chapter.. maybe blood angels too?
Maybe one of those special choices should work out better for me.. the thing is i am painting my army in a similar way to flesh tearers (blood angels successor) But is it possible to field them as a Black Templar successor? Or is that just way out of the line.
Or should i maybe continue with a normal DIY chapter as i am doing now, and add assault and veterans without jump packs in either rhinos/drop pods and use them for the assaulting... i do know i want to field 1 AT dread, 1 AI dread a predator and a vindicator.. the rest is loose
Ah well, hope you got some advice.. would be fun to see if any of you have been in the same thoughts or situation!
Thanks in advance

My advice is to proxy your regular marines first. Use them as Black Templars and try out the army before investing the time and money into it. Regular marines can also be configured to be assaulty also.
Another assaulty army is the Blood Angels and Space Wolves. You can get the BA codex free online from GW site, I believe. Space Wolves codex is a little older and harder to find, but they are good in cc. Finally, there are the Daemonhunter Grey Knights. They're good but more challenging to play.
Don't forget that your Marines have bolt pistols- you can loose off one shot and still charge. Don't have two CCW, but still getting the charge is important, doubly so against Orks.
Yeah, the bolt pistol do help, and as you say neglecting the ork charge is almost a must.
Any of you out there fielded veterans and assault squads without jump packs.. and saw them do anygood? or is it better to just keep the jump packs on and keep bouncing and choosing who to attack?
