Why should we be concerned about the new Imperial Guards, and what can we do about it? Any thoughts on why they will be challenging against us and also on strategies against them?
personally, i'm laying bricks just over the thought of tackling some of those LR's...
Through experience, i'll be podding 2 dreadies on their lines, bringing a sternguard squad in later, infiltrating 2 squads of 10 CC/Shotty scouts and Shrike bringing in a squad of 10 ASM's. The plan? hit them hard and fast (like Branigans Law!), and take down as much as possible on turn 1 with the hope that I damage them so much that they cannot recover beyond turn 2.
If you fight a new (and tooled up) IG list any time soon, let us all know what you used and how it worked out for ya!
I don't have their new codex yet, but I hear they have a weapon/counter against deep strikers...astropaths. Basically they're like Daemonhunter mystics and gives them free shots at any deepstrikers within a certain range. Imagine eating AP3 hellguns, lascannons, or a demolisher cannon blast upon arrival...ouch!
Oh.. that's not quite how their counter against reserves work.. It 'just' subtracts one from the reserve roll, droppod armies will as such still arrive with half their army at turn one.. the other half can be forced to wait quite some time though.. of course they could ally with daemonhunters..
I think what's really to be feared as a SM player is as always from IG is the amount of 5" blasts that deny MEQ saves.. =) their tanks are also argueably more mobile now which doesn't make taking them out any easier..
You shouldn't be too concerned with ap3 stormtroopers as they cost more than a standard tactical squad.. which most find a bit overpriced..
Even with their nerfing guy on reserves I think one of the best cures against IG will be droppods.. IG does not like things being too close.. A lucky Sternguard unit with combimeltas could take out two russes on the turn it lands.. this would pretty much cripple their counter attack..
If your SM force is a gunline however IG will probably cause some trouble, as IG's amongst the shootiest armies..
Actually I suggest you to check out the IG boards as the people there can quickly tell you what's hot and what's not in the new dex, then you can figure out what to do about it.. there's many new faces to the IG I think..
Many IG armies will start going all mechanized I think.. I plan to for the one I have in mind.. as chimeras have gotten a considerable decrease in cost ala our Rhinos..
Then there's the valk/vendetta only lists which will probably bug many armies.. a good counter can be infiltrators as the valks must remain outside 12" on their scout move and thus you can force them further away..
We still have better stats and BS! Think on that while you're getting shot to pieces.... foolish normal SM players. I play Space Wolves so I shouldn't have any problems, just stick a few Blood Claw squads in Rhinos and tarpit all those nice hundreds of lasguns and heavy teams while slowly destroying them all.... easy VP
For you ordinary Marines, I suggest destroying the tanks first and remember that lasguns are still some of the worst weapons in the game and out of an average 50 shots only 3 or 4 Space Marines will die. Always remember that drop pods and deepstriking Termies are your friend
