It seems to me(though I may be completely wrong) that the Blood Angels and the Raven Guard fight very similarly, and I am having a tough decision choosing between which chapter to base my army on. I like the idea of "fluff" so I would want to keep to a very specific kind of "guideline" for what each chapter would actually be able to put out on a battlefield. I dunno any opinions as to which may be the better route to go? Thanks for any info!
I agree, Raven Guard and Blood Angels have a similar mindset - although the Raven Guard are sneaky to the Blood Angel's direct grab for the throat.
The Blood Angel rules are a little out of date at the moment, with no sign of a new codex bringing them in line with the rest of the Marine chapters.
Only two things really connect Raven Guard and Blood Angels: they both tend to lean more towards close combat, and they both make heavy use of jump infantry. That is where the similarities end and the differences begin, however.
Raven Guard are more about sneak attacks and guerrilla warfare, as opposed to the more straight forward "go for the throat" strategies that the Blood Angels employ, as realitycheque pointed out. Raven Guard are also more likely to come up with alternative tactics than Blood Angels, I feel. They will leave their jump packs and chainswords at home if the situation does not call for their use.
So while there are some similarities, they are by no means two sides of the same coin. I suggest you read up on the fluff of both, and feel free to check out this article I wrote, which may give you an idea as to what a basic, generic Raven Guard list would look like: Designing a Fluffy Raven Guard Army List v2.0.
Feel free to PM me if you have any additional Raven Guard questions.
I go with raven guard. Theres no sign of the new BA codex whatsoever. So raven guards it is!!
I really think it will fall down to preference of fluff and preference of playstyle.
This is a stupid queston but can you have a squad of Red BA assult marines with dante and use it as an ally in my existing ultramarines squad in normal games. Dante takes up one HQ slot and so does the BA assult marines
great! Thanks for the help guys, I am definitely going to go look at that guide for making a Raven Guard list, but I'm still not sold, just the idea of being able to take assault squads as a troop choice sounds amazing. I would love to see an apocalypse battle that had both the BA and the RG as allies it would be almost magical as far as I can tell haha
very interesting point; or even in a doubles tournament.
I'd like to see how a BA-RG duo would fare in a doubles tournament
