Hi, just a quick question for you guys. I don't know about everyone else, but I personally hate the look of the Neophytes' (scouts to everyone who isn't a Black Templar player) heads. I think they look Gods awful, probably in no part due to hw badly I pant actual heads. What I want to know is, is there any way to justify Neophytes having helmeted Space Marine heads and still be fluffy acceptable? I have plenty of spare heads for SM but I don't want to paint them then have people whine that "scouts don't have power armour and shouldn't have helmets". Could it be acceptable just to say that although they look like SM helmets they are just normal helmets? I'm very much of the opinion that in a universe full of death spitting aliens and daemons, every bit of protection would be useful. It's why my Marshal doesn't expose his sensitive noggin after all.
Yeah, it fits in with the fluff. Remember the Codex Astartes advises against wasting the lives of marines. Helmeted scouts fits nicely in with this.
I used the WHFB Chaos warrior helmets. Cut off the horns and file them down and they make pretty good scout helmets - I think one the the UK GW staff posted a similar idea on the website. I get the feeling using SM helmets might look a bit odd but the only way to find out is to try it out. Give it a shot an post some pictures out.
Some of the other WHFB helmets could also be used if you don't like the Chaos Warrior ones. Brettonian and Empire knights might be worth a look.
Good luck buddy. Be sure to post pics!
you could also use guard kaskrin helmets. simple chop and replace job would do. it is after all, the same armor (carapace) alternatively you could use kaskrin models refurbished with shotguns/ bolters/ boltpistol and CC weapon since its not like theres any shortage of bolters from space marine sprues. It's a nice idea too. kinda silly of the scouts to not use helmets (then again how many space marine leaders use theirs?? up until the new run of special characters azrael was the only one who had one, and he has a watcher cart it around for him.
Ok O put together a scout with the SM helmet, it looks ok from a model point of view, though my painting skills are lacklustre at best. Cant really show it off too much either because my nice camera has gone walkabouts and I had to use a rubbish old one. For comparison sake I put a regular Space MArine next time him (he isn't fully painted yet)
not bad looking at all. paint job isn't as horrible as you claim either (pistols could maybe use some work, but the rest looks pretty darn good!)
Thanks for the comments. It obviously wasn't too hard to do, just a normal SM head with it's neck almost completely filed away "SM necks are much bigger than scout necks). Though it might be easier to tell them apart without helmets, I really cannot understand why anyone would not have a helmet if they had them available. Commanders maybe, but Scouts don't have fancy Iron Halos or the like.
