Pretty soon, I think we're going to see a lot of people, new and veterans alike, playing the Guards. From what I've heard so far, seems like they will give us a big, big challenge. Wondering if anyone's played the new guardsmen yet, and if so, how did you do against them? What type of strategies did you use, or what type of strategies do you think should be used against them? Which units do we have to beware of? Do we stand a chance? Hopefully, all this input will better prepare the Ordos Malleus to do battle with their renegade kinsmen.
I've just discovered some awesome strategies for Daemonhunters using inducted Imperial Guards!
1) Now with the new Infantry Platoons, you can also get 0-5 Heavy Weapon squads, 0-2 Special Weapon squads, and 0-1 Conscripts. How awesome is that! Imagine up to 21 lascannons & 6 demolition charges...and that's just 1 platoon!!!
2) You can get 50 conscripts and put a BC or GKGM with them to make them fearless! Better yet, upgrade your Platoon Squad Commander with Commander Chenkov & get Send in the Next Wave and you will have a Conscript horde that respawns whenever you want (at the beginning of your next turn)! Unbelievable! An endless horde of conscripts! The only downside is in annihilation games, where they are worth Kill Points everytime they're removed.
3) The best part about 1&2 is since they are all troops, they are all scoring! Downside is in annihilation games, where they are also Kill Points.
4) Now you can give each of your Infantry Squads and your Command Squad Chimeras. Also, chimeras are now cheaper than before (at least for your inducted guardsmen, but not for your own Inquisitorial Stormtroopers).
5) There are now 2 types of Sentinel Squadrons you can take, one of which can carry Plasma Cannons.
6) I'm not sure whether you can take the other Leman Russ variants since right now in the new IG it's called a LR Squadron, but now with your 0-1 Leman Russ Battle Tank heavy slot, you can take 1-3 tanks!
Those are some of the strategies that I could think of. If any more comes up or if you know of any, please add to this thread.
Wow, I'm excited again about inducting some guards in my DH army (imagine 3 Leman Russes & 2 Land Raiders).
The Platoon might well be worth Kill Points, but for 185pts you get a 30-man squad with Stubborn and Ld9. You also get to use the Orders with your Platoon COmmander, which is sweet, plus the aforementioned HW Squads and SW Squads. Outflanking a few meltagun squads with Al'Rahem would be cool.
Personally I rather like the idea of taking the list as Guard with DH Allies. There's some serious potential for GK Allies to lay down some serious hurting in support of the Guard; Valkyries for one thing, plus the tanks are as good as they ever were but the Guard infantry have had a significant boost, meaning a load of cheap bodies plus some Grey Knights and a few big guns here and there is a feasible idea. 24" Scout move from the Valkyrie plus the ability to carry Terminators and PAGKs means a lot of bodies in assault on turn one, and best of all with a big old sea of Guardsmen behind them it doesn't particularly matter if some of your Knights die. That alone is something to smile about, I thik; imagine not having to fret like mad every time you take a casualty. Bliss! >_<
It states very clearly in the Codex that DH's may only take 0-1 Leman Russ Battle Tank as long as two IG troops choices are taken. IG Infantry Platoon is the only choice available since armored fists are no longer a choice.
It's worth a krak!
we may only be able to take the vanilla russ at this point, but now any of the varients (including the lbrt) can upgrade to plasma side sponsons! Ok I'm completely new so maybe you could do this previously, but I was under the impression this is new with the updated codex.
Anyone thought about using IG as the parent codex but using PAGK as your main force?
company command squad
2 vet squads (shotguns)
2 8man pagk squads
nice 1k list that's a twist on the standard 'water warrior' using gunships instead of land raiders... air cav greyknights? =)
I would even go so far as to say that the 0-1 Leman Russ Battle Tank is no longer viable, as there is no "Leman Russ Battle Tank" entry in the new Imperial Guard Codex, but "Leman Russ Squadron(s)" which can include LRBT's.
I'm not arguing in favor of this point, as a matter of fact, I'd hate to see it ruled as such.. but I've seen it happen before, and just thought I'd warn you it may happen yet again.
I think given the restrictions of using IG as allies, and the greater freedom of instead using GK as allies, you might be better off with the latter.
Company Command Squad ( 260 + Options )
+Astropath, Master of Ordinance**
+Special / Heavy Weapons
*Colonel Straken will give any friendly units (including Allied GKs) with a model within 12" the Counter Attack and Furious Charge special rules. Wicked!
**Astropath will grant you +1 to reserves rolls, if you want your 0-1 Teleport Attack, and 0-2 GKT's to deep strike sooner. Master of Ordinance is a XX point model that gives you an unlimited range, no LoS requires, Str 9 AP 3 Ord1 Barage shooting attack O.O
Some other cool/silly tricks...
...Attach a Lord Commisar to your Inquisitor Lord's retinue and watch him promptly execute your Inquisitor when he uses Iron Will to voluntarily fail a morale check.
Inquisitor: "The trap is set, they've taken the bait! Fall back, men! To higher ground, we will strike them on our terms! VICTORY WILL BE OURS, FOR THE EMPEROR!"
Commisar: *BANG* "...what?"
...Use IG officers to boss your GK around (Orders), most potent of all (I would say) is Captain Al'Rahem, who can Order your GK to fire at a squad, then promptly run d6" in any direction.
...Attach a Ministorum Priest to your GKSM squads for rerollable to-hit rolls on the turn they charge into combat.
...Use Lord Castellan Creed to outflank your Inquisitor Lord and his Land Raider. Don't quite know why you would.. but it'd sure as shit scare your opponent! ^-^
...As mentioned before, use Commander Chenkov to grant you access to a limitless supply of Conscripts. They suck so much, who's going to shoot them? But they still claim objectives and can screen your GK's.
Disclaimer: I know this thread is intended for strategies to fight against the IG... but an above post prompted me to go the other direction with my reply.. I appologize if anybody is upset with my further derailing of this thread.

I wrote that as I was waking up.. After rereading the entire thread I realized.. it was already heading in that direction, and thus a moot disclaimer.
Really though. I can't wait to see someone execute their Inquisitor Lord It makes no sense whatsoever, but will be fun as hell to watch ^-^
Company Command Squad ( 260 + Options )Thing is the MoO can only put his template down if he hasn't moved and isn't in combat, so throwing him into a squad with Straken is not a good idea. You'd be better off with a medi-pack for FnP, then take another cheap-arse Command Squad with the MoO in it. The template is pretty cool as long as you have LoS to it, otherwise it's horribly unreliable.+Colonel Straken*
+Astropath, Master of Ordinance**
+Special / Heavy Weapons
+ChimeraThere's nothing in the rules that says you can't do this (the Orders rule talks about "friendly non-vehicle units"), but while twin-linked Stormbolters and best-of-3D6 Running would be a massive boon to the Knights I'm not sure any opponent would let you get away with it....Use IG officers to boss your GK around (Orders), most potent of all (I would say) is Captain Al'Rahem, who can Order your GK to fire at a squad, then promptly run d6" in any direction. You'd need to be running them out of a LR because they'd lose The Shrouding, which would suck worse than not having rerolls....Attach a Ministorum Priest to your GKSM squads for rerollable to-hit rolls on the turn they charge into combat.Don't quite know why?... It's an Outflanking Land Raider, why the heck wouldn't you?! This is a neat trick to be sure....Use Lord Castellan Creed to outflank your Inquisitor Lord and his Land Raider. Don't quite know why you would.. but it'd sure as shit scare your opponent! ^-^They won't do much screening if they're reappearing from the board edge, but they will flood the board and drive your opponent nuts. Somebody should write up a Chenkov tactica and call it "Watch Out; Here Comes Conscripts!"...As mentioned before, use Commander Chenkov to grant you access to a limitless supply of Conscripts. They suck so much, who's going to shoot them? But they still claim objectives and can screen your GK's.
Also Valkyries aren't really THAT killy. BS3 still counts for quite a lot when you're not dealing with FRFSRF.
I'm also fairly shocked that nobody's said "hide powerfists in Combined Infantry Squads" yet :-o
