Here's the question: Are Vanguard Veterans good? And if so, what are some tactics/equipment kits you would give them? Now I know that everything in the 40K universe has its place and use, but what is the Vanguards? Anything on them would be appreciated.
well, i've never tried one but some one told me that a vanguard squads are deadly when you take a drop pod and stick it right behind the enemy lines. if they get on target and don't scatter, good bye enemys!
Well I found 8-10 in a rhino with the power weapon upgraded to TH to be really usefully, run them in the rhino with your other units (in my cause sternguard) then after your sternguard get charged or shot out of their rhino you have a counter charge unit right there to smash whatever it is. If you pedro is around it is awesome you can charge 30 boys and basically when it gets back to your next turn they will be dead and you will still have a good number of the vets left.
(10 vets = 45 attacks and 4 TH attacks off the charge with pedro = 3-4 dead from pistols + 10-11 dead at I4 + 1-3 dead at I1 you win combat by at least 8 = 7+ more dead orks, you should clean up the rest in their assault phase.)
I find they are way to expensive with the jump packs and to make them good with their ability you have to have a homing beacon and hope it lives till they come in and then that it is in the right place. That is just to iffy to be good.

- You must set fire to water or you will be extinguished.
sorry about my first replie. in a moment of stupidity i thought a vanguard squad was a sternguard squad. vanguard squads are pretty much elite assualt squads. but i think they would be pretty good in a drop pod assualt. unfortuneately they would'nt be able to have jump packs. but they would still be good because you would have decent ranged and melee from the vanguard squad, and good fire power from the drop pod.

I used them twice in a landraider. They did so-so. I used them deep striking once on top of a locator beacon and they rocked! They dominated!! They killed and chopped and killed some more!!! They ended up crossing the whole table after the first wipe-out and winning the game for me. I haven't tried them since...
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
In almost every case, you're better off spending the points on a different squad, such as an Assault Squad (or two), a Command Squad, or maybe some Assault Terminators. For the price (after upgrades), Vanguard Veterans really aren't worth it. They just cost too much when properly geared, and they don't do enough to justify the large point cost, especially since one of the (now cheaper) pie plates in the game (such as the IG Leman Russ Battlecannon) will quickly neuter the squad.
If you want to use them for fun, or for fluff reasons, there are ways to make them at least marginally effective, but if you're shooting for a competitive list, you're best leaving them at home in lieu of one of the options above.
No, they're terrible.
Expensive, 1 W models that will kill 1 unit if they don't scatter. After that, you've got 6-8 very expensive models who die as easily as normal marines sitting in the open.
They can work on foot in a Land Raider, but even then I'd prefer Terminators.
They arent as bad as people make them out to be, I try and use them where i want big power assault sqauds but dont want to be limited by the 5 model cap of the command squad, Plus they are only 1/4 of the points over a basic marine for an extra attack and ld, and for the extra few points that the serg gets you get a power weapon, or a free exchange to a lightning claw, They can be armed with many hammer, claws, fists etc, which make them quite unavoidable, especially aginst tau,
Mine runes with 3 shield, 2 hammers, a few power weapons and a fist or 2, and the rest just standard pistol and ccw, i run them in a redeemer and when people try to assault the LR they get hit by the vangaurd instead, The Lr being formidable in its own right,
At the end of it it doesnt matter how much the unit costs or how its outfitted but how it is used.
I like them, but I've yet to use the Heroic Intervention trick - I don't like leaving expensive units in reserve. I'd also not take them against anything with less than a 4+ save, as you'd be better off with 2 standard assault squads.
I just get 10 of them with jump packs, lightning claws (PF for the serg) and storm shields and infiltrate the whole lot with Shrike. Turn 1 assault, job done. It's expensive, but mostly worth it. In my last game they wiped out a full (20?) squad of CSM, a havok squad and squad of berzerkers, single handedly clearing three objectives for my tactical squads to move up on.
Cost is a huge factor in the unit's effectiveness, since for the price of a tricked out Failguard unit I can run Assault Terminator, who are simply better. And I'll probably have points leftover for a vehicle or two.
