What is the best way to use an orbital bombardment. Would it be to kill a nasty tank or infantory. Or mayby to remove things from objectives. Give me yr views and war storys on how to use them.
Thanks in advance
I use were the biggest cluster of units is and hope for the best.
My first choice, would be a squad. Either one large enough to give you trouble, or one that is the highest threat ( an IG troop choice with 15 lascannons ).
As for tanks, this would be "iffy". I wouldn't waste a OB, on a lone tank, though a tank-line or a MEQ force are good reasons.
Squads on objectives, would be the last thing I'd worry about. Unless, the squad is being a thorn in my side.
I typically try for the largest clump of things or threat that happens to be surrounded by other enemy units to increase the likelyhood of at least 1 hit even on a scatter.
Space Marines: W15/L7/D3
Imperial Guard: W6/L4/D0
All battles have key units upon which the whole army is based. A LandRaider, a unit of veterans, a specific HQ unit, or a bunch of infiltrators with clear line of sight across the map. OB is perfect for removing these key units and so forcing the enemy to change their entire battle strategy from turn 1.
Yesterday, my OB took down three wartrucks packs with boys which promptly resulted in many casualties from the trucks exploding and so imoblised a large portion of the horde i was fighting. The day before I played an Apoc game, where my OB tore through a BA Honor Guard squad including Mephiston.
Sometimes just taking down a mob is enough, but usually, target the key unit/s in the enemy army and cross your fingers =)
i think that they are good for large groups of enemies or nasty HQ choices such as ork warbosses. also they wold probably wreak havoc on monstrous creatures.
Ive heard a lot of people say"DON'T GET CHAPTER MASTER"
WHY he can use orbital bobarment in his first turn them get into a transport and ATTACK
Using OB on horde armies is your best bet. When banking on scatter, it's not enough reliability to write home about. With that said, if you miss your roll to hit then you're up sh*t's creek without a paddle.
Similarly, using the OB on a single tank or monstrous creature will either result in a sweet victory or bitter defeat. Don't let yourself rely on that one template ever. Use it only as a reinforcement.
In summary, OB is a huge gamble. You only get one and for the love of the Emperor, dont fail the hit. Tactically, its a GREAT last ditch effort to remove scoring units from points obviously again gamblin' away. Also its best used early game to reduce chance to nuke your own men.
IMO, its fun
So YES OB or NO
