I have the newest SM codex, and was wondering if i was thinking of doing a DA army should i get their codex which i know is outdated now, or just buy DA models and play them as vanilla marines using the SM codex? The rules would be dated, but i dont know if the rules for DA in their codex would be better or worse.
I know if i use the DA codex i cannot mix and match from the SM codex, that means no Stern, and whatnot. But do the DA rules outwiegh the loss of options?
thanks in advance
Depends on how you wish to play the DA's. They are basically 3 chapters rolled into one, with the Deathwing (terminator's galor) and Ravenwing (bikes, speeders and everything fast attack) or the regular style army. I think if you were going to play a balanced style army, it would be more beneficial to yourself to use that new SM codex, being that it's got some really sweet options in it, but if you wanted to specialized in a part of the DA's force, then the DA's book would be best.
Check out Double Edged Painting blog for more information on commissions and work in progress
there are 3 codex's that I can see working for Dark Angels
Chaos space marines, for Fallen, just ignore the more wild options
Dark Angels, if you wanna be a purist
and Space marines, which can do everything the DA one can, and would be my choice if I wanted to go so low as to do marines
you want lots of termis?, you can take 30 from the marine codex and split them into 5 man units, not scoring, but you get better shields
Lots of bikers?, captain on bike with relic blade for master of the ravenwing, and lots of bikers, get the choice of taking scout bikers too if you wanted
Basic DA mixture, well its all there including new toys like redeemers, you can take a Mortis dreadnought (not as many options but its legal without having to argue with asshats about if FW rules are legal), you get scouts put in the proper place, and [deleted inflammatory marine comments] you could take Pedo Cant as your HQ[deleted MORE inflammatory language about marines].
There's no need to be rude like that, especially in the marine sub-forum. Please respect other players.
why?, its all true

If you want to play DAs, then use the DA Codex, it's excellent.
It would depend, on which "style" interestes you.
If you are looking to form a "Deathwing", "Ravening", or a mixing of both, you would naturally use the DA codex. There rules, for these choices, are quite useful.
As for a standard force, it depends. If you don't want to include, either the DW and/or RW, you could go with the 5th ed SM codex.
As for Special Characters, I find Azrael, being anything close to "useful". Though you need the DW master, or the RW master, to make such forces.
Just my two bloter shells.
I am building a DA army and I am using the new Space Marine codex. I painted my bikes black and used the ravenwing shoulderpads. I painted a landspeeder green though, just because I like the look better. I have sternguard veterans and a thunderfire cannon. I am not using ANY dark angel rules, but I am using the DA models and paint scheme (except for the landspeeder).
No apologies from me. I like the SM codex better. It is perfectly legal, and they are very nicely painted and based.
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Forgive me for being a noob to the new releses (or not so new releases) i bought the DA codex 4E when it came out, and have building my army around it. however as i see now its out dated, can i mix the new SM codex with this? What about the special characters from the SM codex like Telion etc, if i rename them are they legal? I know if i wish to build pure Ravenwing or Deathwing army i should use the DA codex. but what about a standard DA army. I find the DA codex limiting to say the least as the SM codex has loads of cool options.
Another noob question ive been hearing alot of things here about Vanilla armies......What is this all about? what is a vanilla codex????
The 'Vanilla Codex' is the basic Space Marine codex that deals with the standard Chapters. The DA codex you have isn't outdated, as it's still the latest version of the DA codex out. There just happens to be a new version of Codex: Space Marines available now.
As for mixing your codexes*, that's not allowed. You can either use one or the other, but not both in the same army (unless playing large games with multiple detachments, but that's a different kettle of squigs entirely).
* I was disappointed the plural for codex wasn't codexi or codi or something cooler
