Recently I have been looking at different ways to field space marine captains and chapter masters due to the fact mine end up being killed off before they can be of any effectiveness.
So far i have been able to speculate on a couple things:
1. Artificer Armour is pretty much a must, With the amount of Ap 3 weaponary growing i need something that can stand up when I get hit by a battle cannon etc.
2. He has initiave 5, So lets use it, hence I can rule out fists and hammers (a fav of mine).
So i have 2 combinations so far, which compirse of twin lighning claws, or a relic blade, storm shield and digi weapons.
I wondering what people A. think of these configurations, and B. is there any others which allow the Captain/Chapter master to keep his points down and keep being effective.
Also what squads apart from the usual command squad whould be good with the Captain/Chapter master?
Ta for now
I think not. When you look at your captain additional equpment is must. He really needs 30 point invest in weapon. Thats minimum. Than defence, artificier armor or storm shield... i think take bike and place him in bike squad (not in command squad, which is not retinue and capatain must not be in command squad). You gain speed, durability, save for high speed, more rounds in close combat and one more troop scoring squad.
Captain is not cheap character. His problem is when you need really use his potentional you must invest too much points in him, which in space marine army could be better placed elsewhere. I must him buy big weapon to use his ws, he is expansive so points for armor and shield are good investment, he is more expansive, i need use him most close combat and buy him a bike and digital weapons yes...and than you look what do stern guard for spend points.
What type of army do you face off against most often? You mentioned a battle cannon in your post. Is he getting pasted as you approach your opponent?
I think a relic blade is a must if you are avoiding fists and hammers and you can't beat it's strength at initiative. If you are looking for speed and mobility I'd definitely place him on a bike and attach him to a bike squad. Give the squad a powerfist sergeant and a flamer/meltagun and you're good to go. Add a storm shield for flavor if you want the better invulnerable save for greater survivability.
Outside of putting him on a bike I think a good configuration in my opinion would be a relic blade, combi-weapon and artificer armor. You could then either attach him to a combat squad similarly configured like the bike squad above and put them in a Razorback. Alternatively, you could slap a relic blade, artificer armor and a storm shield on him and put him with some assault terminators in a Land raider.
Overall, I think at minimum you'll be paying 130-150 points for him, but based on your post it sounds like the bike option might work well for you.
I hope my rambling reply helps you out and good luck.
I like to give mine Artificer Armour, Relic Blade and a combi-weapon. I'll occasionally splash out for DigiWeapons or Hellfire Rounds depending on what I'm fighting.
Mostly I'll put him on a bike, just to get bike squads as troops. Larger games I'll buy the Command Squad retinue but it's one hell of a point sink.
