Topic of the week: Favourite unit of the New Codex

Pretty straight forward this one, guys! I'm riding on the wave of awesome that is a new codex, and I figure I'll keep plugging away at it 'till the poor thing's been drained.

But yeah, there are so many things I love about the new codex. I never thought that would actually be the case, but this thing really hasn't let me down at all! When I heard doctrines were going the way of the dodo, along with a generic wargear section, I started to get all depressed. But no!! All seems very well and good!

And I must admit, I'm finding it hard to decide which individual unit seems to outshine the rest! Not even sure if such a thing is indeed possible - there's a fair amount of variation available in this book, so lots of different units will probably be seen as best by many different people! And I'm sure that many units are equally the 'best', so I suppose that leaves us with one other option:

    Which unit is your favourite?

Is it a carry over from the old codex, with a new style, or is it something bright and shiny new! (Or in the case of the griffon, brought out from mothball storage where it's been kept for a few years!)

For me, I'd have to say it's the basic infantry squad. Cheap, versatile, and with the ability to take commissars (sweet!), as well as orders, and that amoeba ability, these slightly trained meatshields win the day for me! Cut down in massive numbers (perhaps not as much as the conscripts I plan on fielding), some of them might still make it over to that objective you crave so much.

But then again, maybe I just thrive on the carnage they so readily supply!

How about you? Which unit is so heinously powerful you almost bit off your tongue reading the statline? Or which simply captures the spirit of the army you want to build?

    And why? WHY?

    Discuss, people, discuss!!!

"Pickles, the drummer, doodily doo. (Ding-dong, doodily, doodily, doo.)"

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.

dude the first thing that will come to any players mind is the valkyrie/vendetta it's just SO DAMN COOL

theres never really been any unit in the guard dex that other armies have been envious of maybe the lrbt but all armies have an equivelant with exceptions but i have yet to hear a single person say they don't want one, two, three etc

not just the rules but the model is droolworthy- truly one of gw's more spectacular releases ever!

close second has to be the hydra if for no other reason than i finally have acess to somthing that can wipe out those bloody annoying flyers or put paid to fish of fury
Believe in me, even if we are torn apart our feelings will unite us that is what this post is all about.

Yeah - I hear that about the valkyries/vendettas! A mate of mine just grabbed 9 of the things!

Is a pretty droolworthy model, as you say. Doesn't suit my army style, but hey - still freakishly great.

Yeah, I do like the hydra too, I must admit. Half way through a conversion to make my own, in the forgeworld style!

My favorite unit from the new Codex has gotta be this newest incarnation of Veterans. The fact that they can score combined with the awesomeness that is the Valk/Vendetta (or the cheaper Chimera for that matter) makes them a wonderful choice for mech players like myself. Not gonna lie, when I heard doctrines were going bye bye, I was sure that my Grenadier army was toast. Now because of the difference in points cost, I can actually afford to bring more guns to the table. Needless to say, I am excited about it.

The infantry platoon has always been my favorite. They are the ultimate underdog that pulls together and smashes everything. Now they are just bigger, badder, and cheaper.

    Favorite: Infantry Platoon
    2nd Favorite: Heavy Weapons Team

Why? Because combined, without venturing into any of the flash that exists elsewhere in the codex, you create the most unkillable destructive power available in the 40k universe.

That is, of course, if you assume ~36 autocannons and 9 lascannons isn't going too far in a 2k list...

#1: New Vets. These guys are great. Cheap, extremely versatile, and up to 3 specials weapons <3

    #2: Valk/Vend. Too damn cool.

Chimera, cheaper and more accessible. Combined with the Valkyrie means that I can run a viable mechanised army, which makes me happy.

I love the Deathstrike. I will probably never use one, but there is something about 80 feet that just sounds good. Say it to yourself '80 foot range'.

After that I'm falling back to the Hydra and Exterminator, because both are full of so much autocannoney love for my opponents.

My favourite unit of the new Codex has to be Veterans. It allows you to keep much the same style of army that you had in the previous codex (with doctrines and such) and then build around it with some of the more specialist units. Though they've lost the ability to deep strike/infiltrate, the idea of a group of heavily armed and armoured (for guardsmen) troops dropping from a fast moving aircraft is rather exciting. Sure, they might splatter themselves against the ground, but if they manage to land you can wave good bye to your intended target . Like many others, the Vendetta comes a close second, if only for the description

    ...roving search-and-destroy wings...
    Red Wing standing by...anyone?

All in all I think it's a great codex. Flexible, competitive and loads of great models to boot, roll on plastic stormtroopers.

    Ciao, Plastic
