I have one player in my regular group who plays a chaos army that consists of: Kharn, Abbadon, Khorne Berserker squad, Chaos Marines (assault focused), Havoc Squad (don't know what configuration), and a defiler (everything replaced w/ DCCWs).
I have another player who will be starting once he gets some money (which will probably take a while). His army will consist of: Kharn, Daemon Prince, and everything else a berserker.
My question is, how would you go about beating these two in assault?
When you fail to drink the Banana of Plasma, succeed in eating the Coffee Bean of Truth
Well for me just basically shoot till they come to you. And when they have arrived get your assult squads to jump over and get those chaos scum.
So keep assult squads (if u have them) and use them as a counter assulting unit. So when ur dev squads are being assulted bring them in from behind a building or somethin and kill the in assult.
Have a counter attacking assult squad for every shooty squad you have.
hint: shoot them before they come to you
If you mean beat them primarily in close combat;
Ideally getting the charge would be your first priority; Denying furious charge to Zerkers while adding 1 attack to your charge will stack the odds in your favor. Any method that gives you this edge should be considered: Landraiders, Jump pack vanguard , shrike or scout bikers for example. Secondly; get some close combat staying power: I'd field Lysander , an absolute must for any serious chance at close combat with chaos, Storm shield/Thunder hammers terminators , Ironclad , command squads are good choices in my opinion.
Evil space pirates ... err i mean chaos marines ,can easily be tied down by Ironclads, terminators or bikers, long enough for you to gang up on the units you want dead. One on one you can either stalemate or loose, you need 2 space marine per chaos to have a decent chance of wining. You can further the killing power of some of your units with your HQ , Pedro and Korsharro khan pops into mind; Use korsharro with some lightning claw terminators or vanguards on foot, the furious charge & hit and run rules will make these 2 units particularly lethal. Use pedro and an honor guard with banner to boost surrounding units with attack and moral check re rolls.
Aside from that a librarian is a great choice , if he's chaos he's probably fielding "Lash" , so it can help , use "Null zone" to take down units with invl saves.
All this being said , you're better off shooting plasma & vindicator shells at them instead of trying to best them in Cc.

AP2 Shooting, pile a load of lascannons onto Abaddon and he'll die eventually, one lascannon shot is usually enough to dispose of Kharn without too much difficulty. As to the rest of the army, bikers with meltas for the defiler, the CSM I suggest shooting them to pieces before they get to you and for when they eventually do get to you I suggest having a couple of counter-assault squads - Vanguard Veterans work REALLY well - and that way you should be able to deal with it. Won't be easy mind.
I read some random tactica somewhere on these forums that dealt with something along these lines. Essentially it said split you force into 2 main groups, your opponent must then choose which to focus on or to also split his units for this.
Next comes you picking which of your units you want to protect and which you want to sacrifice and then aim everything at the units coming towards those you want to protect , essentially means you potentially sacrifice half your army but if done right and with luck on your side those heading towards your protected units will be wiped out before reaching you and hopefully the sacrifice side can tie up the enemy for however long is needed.
Hope that made sense
I wouldnt bother trying to beat chaos at hand to hand, thats like trying to out shoot tau or IG not gonna happen.
Its not the way SM are to be played vs CSM IMHO.
The easiest method is to simply mech up and shoot them. If he goes all combatty, he can't hurt your vehicles and you can run circles around him blasting his army.
Other than that, the best contender for HtH powerhouse in the SM list is Assault Terminators (TH/SS) or Command Squads (TH/SS as well). They laugh off all those power weapons and smack anything silly.
