After playing with the new hellhound I don't thinked it's nerfed at all. Sure it increased in price, but it's now a fast vehicle and doesn't need to roll to hit.
It's loss of range isn't that big a deal when you think about it. The old rules were 24" but you have to place the entire template in LOS and withing range. The new rules are the narrow end must be within 12" that combined with the length of the flamer template and the fast vehicle status the hellhound now enjoys and it's overall range including movement is 24" to the narrow end, 32" if your trying a long shot and stretching out the template. Compared to the max range of 30" of the old hound and I think it's gotten a lot better.
What do yall think?
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
I don't see the problem with it either. 30" range vs 24+flame template" is not a huge deal, and you no longer have to roll to hit. I forget which book had Hellhounds essentially open-topped, but that is no longer around either.
It's quite a good little vehicle for massacring infantry.

Yeah i agree, it has gotten better. besides now it can mount a hull heavy flamer or multi melta for extra power instead of being limited to the heavy bolter.

I've always wanted to try out the Hellhound just never got around to it.
We who have seen war will never stop seeing it....In the silence of the night, we will always hear the screams....
I love its being a fast vehicle. Not only does it put down the hurt on swarms, its speed means the survivors only hit on 6's in CC...AND, the Hellhound has a good secondary role as an objective contester. We got all these new toys and the old ones still work best.

Hellhound doesn't do it for me anymore. Costs more points, and the range shortening means that your tank risks getting punched to death on the enemy's next turn. Yes, its a fast vehicle. For the same number of points I can get a Valkyrie which drops two large blast templates, mounts a multilaser, and can get a pair of heavy bolters cheaply. Or for 30 points more than the Hellhound, I get the Eradicator which basically has an Inferno Cannnon with extra range, and can carry sponson weapons as well, on top of having more armor.
The Hellhound variants are more appealing to me than the Hellhound, because that role of horde infantry killer has appeared in so many new units, many of which do it more efficiently (Hydras, Griffons, Eradicators, Valkyries, etc.). I place a great value on the Bane Wolf that kills anything without a 2+ save or invulnerable save with ease (even taking its short range into consideration) or the Devil Dog which could serve an anti-tank function, but could also be thought of as a mobile plasma cannon with an extra point of strength, thanks to the Melta Cannon using a blast template.
I just don't see a reason to use Hellhounds anymore. They were great units in the old guard codex, but there's a whole new group of schoolyard bullies in the new dex that have beaten up the Hellhounds and stolen their lunch money.

If was going against Terms or MEQs Banewolves are nice counter units.
The devil dog is an enigma to me. with 24" range it means that once within 12" you're rolling 8+2D6. Thats a tempting target to handle land raiders, eldar mech swarms etc.
In a tourney setting though I don't know.
Fifth Edition Saved 40k for Me. I love my ratlings and my cover saves!
HH/BW w/ hull HF are not a bad FA option. However, most would rather have a Valk/Vend, they simply give you more for the points imo (fast skimmer, outflank/scout, transport, and good antitank or antihorde).
Personally, I like the BW more. Can move 12" and double tap w/ turret & hull templates.
However, if you are not building a "take all comers list" for a tourny, you can throw a 130 point HH/BW in your list and pick which one you are using after you find out who you are playing
Yes, it's dirty, but I don't mind dirty.
All fast vehicle does is make up for 6 of the missing inches really.
The hellhound's price increase made it unplayable for me. Even if it wasn't directly nerfed, everything else got better while it pretty much stayed the same, a nerf in comparison.
The job of a Hellhound is now replaced by a cheaper Platoon Command Squad with Flamers mounted in a Chimera with HF and ML. Does counter-attack better and deadlier.
But, yeah the Hellhound is outshone in all respects in the new dex IMHO.
