Ok so i bought myself a shiny librarian in terminator armour because I wanted a psyker in my army.
So now comes the question 'what is the most appropiate power to take? which ones are better to use, or which make a good combination?'
All in all i have a TON of questions about the Librarian powers so if you guys could simply break them down for me in a comprehensive way i'd appreciate it very much. Pros/Cons, Combinations, What units does it work best with/against?
I'm doing an Ultramarines army if that helps any.
1. Tyranids - 15,000 pts
2. Chaos Space Marines - 7,100 pts
3. Space Marines - 6,000 pts
Just looking at the options in the codex should give you an idea on what each power is used against (you know, machine curse isnt so good against infantry ), but anyway, here goes:
Smite - good Vs troops and terminator-equivalents. Not very effective against vehicles but has a chance to glance AV10 armour
Force Dome - useful for giving the attached squad a little more protection from low AP weapons, but not that useful.
Machine Curse - useful for getting a single hit in there, but its impossible to destroy a vehicle with this power.
Avenger - Excellent for taking down hordes and Marine Equivalents (MEQ's) - Can glance AV11 armour
Quickening - Excellent for getting into combat and getting the first hit in CC - use with the Force Weapon for instant-death goodness.
Null Zone - Excellent for forcing Terminator-Equivalents to roll lots of saves, useless against units without an invulnerable save.
Might of the Ancients - Excellent for smacking high-toughness units and Monstrous Creatures (MC's). Also good against vehicles (acts like a melta-hit), requiring only two 4's to glance AV14!
Gate of Infinity - Useful for bouncing a shooty unit around the board - not so useful for an assaulty unit. Scatter is a b*t*h too.
Vortex of Doom - Crap range, epic damage! Its like a Vindicator round, just worse! =)
Typical builds are :
Epistolary : Avenger (or smite) and Gate, attached to a Sternguard squad - bounce around the battlefield unleashing lots of AP2/3 shots then moving on.
Regular : Quickening, attatched to a unit of assault marines - the threat range is reduced slightly, but the damage they can deal with the Libararian striking first with his force-sword removes almost all IC's in the target unit!
Epistolary : Smite and Null Zome - Excellent for taking apart Terminator Equivalents.
Epistolary : Might of the Ancianets and Machine Curse - Excellent for dealing with vehicles and MC's
Hope that little rant helps!
Any quesions, let me know!
Erm, you have to forgo a psychic attack to use your force weapon, so you have to use EpistolaryRegular : Quickening, attatched to a unit of assault marines - the threat range is reduced slightly, but the damage they can deal with the Libararian striking first with his force-sword removes almost all IC's in the target unit!
For get your Mr T, John Mayer leaks pure awesomeness with every note he plays.
you should know better rabbit!
"All of the tainted shall fall before me".
I personally use a librarian (epistolary) with a combi-plasma, gate, and force dome. He and a bunch of sternguards jump around the battlefield unleashing close range death, with a nice 5+ invulnerable save.
Endless fun in apocalypse with dome if you have a lot of librarians to accompany squads as they get a save against those nasty templates.
Just my choice, hope it helps.
The Librarian is a character that is so versitile but gets expensive very fast.
Epistolary with Terminator armour and Stormshield costs as much as Vulkan, in addition to this i have not used one yet and trying to guess which combination of spells that would maximise efficiency can be ambiguous.
The two load outs i want to try for a librarian leading a Sternguard unit are:
1) Epistolary with Terminator armour and Stormshield plus Smite and Gate of Infinity
2) Epistolary with Force Dome and Gate of Infinity
The second option is cheaper, which would you use?

If you ever face off against Daemons, USE NULL ZONE!!!
I used it in a game a little while ago, and the guy's army was shredded within 3 turns - one of which he spent off the table!!! Daemons are hard pressed to make many saves as it is, forcing re-rolls is just plain brutal.
