    Mechanized Tactics

    Hey guys,

I've been thinking about getting a mechanized army together, something a bit different from my normal list. Has anyone had much success with a mechanized list, and if so, what kind of tactics do you employ?

I am new to guard, and I have played 4 games so far. My best success has been with Mech list. I absolutely love the Veterans, and of course if you wanna go mech, these guys are a great troop choice for that, because you can throw them in Chimeras and Valks/Vendettas and pack a mean punch when they jump out.

I run 4 squads of vets, 2 in chimeras, and 2 in vendettas, I run 2 different set ups...and of course 2 of each.

Setup 1, Heavy Flamer, Plasma Gun X 2, Plasma Pistol, and Demolitions
Setup 2, Plasma Pistol, Melta Gun X 3, Demolitions

I play against marines a ton, so this is a great setup for me as they are great vs troops and vehicles.

Around that list I just put my HQ in a chimera and then fit in as many leman russ variants as I can. I used the Exterminator with heavy bolter sponsons for the first time last night and it did amazingly well. The Exterminator is probably my favourite of the Russ Variants because it has multi functions.

Now do you pretty much use that as an armored company with a few infantry stragglers? I'm looking at doing an infantry-based list mounted in Chimeras with two LRBT's for support, but I'm not sure what tactics I could employ with that.

Mech is great, easily the strongest way to build the new book. That's just how 5th edition works now, with tougher and cheaper vehicles running around.

With a mixed list, you will have to be more careful with your vehicles as you'll have less to absorb fire and casualties. What do you plan to run?

    HQ

    CCS
    Commander w/ Bolter
    Grenade Launcher x2, Regimental Standard
    Chimera

    TROOPS

    PCS
    Commander w/ Bolter
    Meltagun x2
    Chimera

    Infantry Squad
    Grenade Launcher, Autocannon

    Infantry Squad
    Grenade Launcher, Autocannon

    Infantry Squad
    Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher

    PCS
    Commander w/ Bolter
    Meltagun x2
    Chimera

    Infantry Squad
    Grenade Launcher, Autocannon

    Infantry Squad
    Grenade Launcher, Autocannon

    Infantry Squad
    Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher

    HEAVY SUPPORT
    LRBT x2

thinking of throwing a vets squad w/ autocannon & sniper rifle into the mix, but I'm not so sure now. It seems like the consensus is that using regular infantry doesn't work as well as vets do for mechanized armies.

The other one I'm thinking of running is:

    HQ

    CCS
    Commander w/ Bolter
    Grenade Launcher x2, Regimental Standard
    Chimera

    TROOPS

    Vet Squad
    Sniper Rifle x3, Autocannon

    Vet Squad
    Sniper Rifle x3, Autocannon

    Vet Squad
    Meltagun x3

    Vet Squad
    Meltagun x3

    Vet Squad
    Grenade Launcher x3, Autocannon

    Vet Squad
    Grenade Launcher x3, Autocannon

    HEAVY SUPPORT

    LRBT x3

Each list runs at about 1500 points

A couple Chimerae to fling some suicide command squads around isn't really a Mech list. Try taking the second list, dropping the sniper/autocannon squads and buying Chimerae for all the other troops. The Chimera's heavy weapons will suffice for the loss of firepower. Maybe drop a Russ for 3 lascannon Sentinels? That's a Mech list.

what kind of tactics do you employ?
    1. Two tanks are three times better than one. Don't rely on any one vehicle or unit to get its job done. Guard units are more interdependent than most! Bring backups.

    2. Watch your KP numbers. Mech lists are particularly vulnerable to this old problem. If you take infantry squads then you can 'amoeba up' when a KP mission comes along but Veterans are the natural fit for a Mech list. There's a balance to be struck between the two. Also, don't bring many varieties of vehicles--you want to have the option to squadron even if you don't plan to.

    3. Plan your play. Vehicles have many uses, from shooting to blocking LOS to carrying a transported unit through an Ork horde in semi-safety. You should start all of your games with a strategy but Mech lists only shine with really good generalship.

    4. Go easy on the upgrades. Heavy stubbers, extra armor, Pask and camo netting are all great upgrades to have but not one of them is as good as having another unit entirely. Choose carefully and err on the side of no upgrades at all.

Yeah, that what I assumed , anyway i'm currently working on my mechanized steel legion list at the moment and so far I have enough models for:

    *(2x) Veteran Squads w/3x meltas
    *(2x)Veteran Squads w/3x plasma
    *Command Squad w/4x plasma
*(2x) Hellhound tanks (most likely will use them as Devil Dogs)
*LRBT box set (thinking about using it as an exterminator)

I'm do planto get more models and I'll post my army lists as soon as I can. I already know what I'm going to do but I'm still debating whenever to give my veterans carapace armor or not.

Is This List the sorta thing you're talkin' about?
(Yes, I'm shamelessly plugging my own list, but with no one actually giving me any feedback, I'm getting slightly annoyed.)

Do you guys find it more effective to rush up and deploy, or have the infantry stay in their Chimeras and perform constant drive by's?
