I'm going to get an addition to my guard army. I currently have:
2 Leman Russes
150 guardsmen (including heavy and special weapons along with storm troopers)
My goal is to be able to field a heavy (tournament) list.
Should I get a Demolisher, a Chimera, or a Valkyrie?
Chimera, personally. Cheap as all get out, decent mobility, and not a giant fire magnet like the valkyrie would be with that little armor on the field. A valkyrie after that would be the next choice.
"The sergeant major asked me what my job is. I told him it's to do what I am told. He gave me a medal. I like the Imperial Guard."
"Innocentia Probat Nihil"
All 3? Kidding.
The Valkyrie has a lot going for it, but I'm intending to buy them mainly to convert them into Vendettas (though magnetized so I can use them as regular Valks if the urge strikes). I'm assuming you don't have the parts or funds to buy the necessary bits to make Vendettas....
So then I'd go with the Demolisher. The Demolisher is a good tank for the guard, and a bare bones Demo' is useful for being able to move forward and provide effective fire support. Also very useful is the fact that the kit comes with plasma cannon sponsons. I wouldn't put them on your demolisher but if you slap them on a regular Leman Russ, you have my new favorite All-Purpose Machine-o-Death (trademarked)! Good range, lots of blast templates, AP 2 and AP 3, all high strength, and clocking in at just under 200 points for the whole package.
To my mind, purchasing the Demolisher would essentially be giving you two very worthwhile tanks to add to your list--naked demolisher and plasma Russ, which beats out either one Chimera or one Valkyrie.
Can't realy go wrong with any of the choices though, they're all quite good. Chimeras as extra protection and firepower for a crucial squad, at a bargain price. Valkyrie/Vendetta providing transport, speed, and good concentrated firepower, and the Demolisher for the above listed reasons.
"I would listen to Sokhar. The man's a genius. Listen."~Lord Yossanrion"Thanks, Sokhar. There was some legitimately good advice in between the low-grade profanity, blaspheming and veiled insults."~Quick"Well thought, intelligently put, with a hint of sarcastic bastard!"~Diggum's Hammer
I voted for the Chimera. Cheap for what it does. Not a high-priority target (unless you put something inside that makes them one). The Command Vehicle rule helps too.
Valkyrie all the way, magnetized for Vendetta fun. 5th edition has quite a bit of emphasis on speed so anything able to quickly and reliably bring guns around the field is made of win.
"Darnath Lysander is the Samuel L. Jackson of the 40k universe."
Chimera, no question.
Make sure to give it a hull Heavy Flamer
Chimeras are extremely effective now, throw some Vets with Meltaguns in them and have at it
Unless you have to use two Lascannons for each single lascannon to represent twin linked. Im not sure if you have to do that though.
I picked up a couple FW kits. They are nice, and not too expensive. They have the TL cannons, plus a nose piece that looks like some sort of sensing array. Unless you have access to 6 lascannons or so, I think the FW kit is a pretty good deal.
