Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey corpse god worshippers, quick question for ya'll. I'm a loyal devotee to the magnificent and glorious craftworlds who plays against A LOT of marines. A unit that I seldom see are those termies with the 3+ invuln. If it were me, I would spam those suckers every chance I got, but I really don't see them that often. How many of you guys use em, and if you don't why don't you?
As addendum, what is your favorite loadout for termies if you do take em at all?
Your faithful enemy of the Imperium,
Personally, I can't fit them in my 2000pt list. They're costly, a 5 man unit with a transport (LR) is approx ~400+pt. That's over 20% of a list.
Terminators come in 3 flavors, only one has the 3++ you are speaking of. Assault Terminator with thunderhammers and Storm Shield, these are your 3++ boys. Assault Terminators with Lightning Claws, and Standard shooty Termies, with assault cannon/multi-missle launcher.
I have yet to include either variation of Assault Terminators, again as I find them too expensive points-wise to field them effectively.
I have bit the armor, and taken a squad of shooty Terms. And they do well, they don't kill as much as I'd like but they do draw an immense amount of fire, which can be rather helpful.
Can't you deep strike em though? That'll save costs on a LR. I've seen the other two flavors of termies a lot, but they aren't as terrifying as I had once assumed, but the 3++ could tar a semitruck. Or a demon prince, which ever hits first.
Yes, Terminators (most or all of them) can deep strike via teleport.
However, they are unable to assault the turn they arrive. This makes them nearly full army priority 1. Either of the 2 CC variant squads, will be blasted so heavily, I'm not sure even 3++ will save them. Still figuring there's only 5 of them, knocking out 2 of them, they squad tends to stall in assault.
I am definitely not the most experienced user with terminators. All I can give you is my personal experience and what I've witnessed.
My style of army is very balanced, I deal with "elite" cc units by blowing them apart from range. I deal with regular troops with my regular tacticals and speeders, and I rush enemy HQ units and heavy weapon teams with assault.
For the cost, my regular assault marines (jump packs) out perform any terminators I've seen. Much better mobility, a bit more versatile, and they cost half the points.
As Xpyre35 said they are extremely epensive but I find it word it. Just The other day just for kicks I played my one squad of TH/SS termies against about 750 points of tau and whiped out 4/5 of his army
Cool, I appreciate your response, its exactly what I'm looking for. I got heavily chided in the eldar forum for not accounting for the storm shield termies in one of my lists and I can honestly say that I've come across them so rarely that I think its a safe bet to expect to not have to worry about it. I kinda assumed the same thing as what you said, they are great on paper but you can get much better point conversions out of other options.
Just thought I'd make sure that there aren't frequently used builds that centered around the sheildy termies.
I've got 10 power fist/storm bolter (2 heavy flamer) in my 1500 list, add a librarian ( in terminator armor of course) a cup of gates of infinity ,a dash of locator beacon , then BAM! you've got yourself a "Creme brulez, a la Eldar"
The only reason i don't have 3++ terms , or more than 10 terminators , is that my force is a recycled 4th edition chaos list; So i tried to limit my tactic to the models i had, its working out very well actually. Incidentally i would field my entire elite section with them given the chance... ill probably magnetize my terms to that end anyways

I often use TH/SS Terminators in my lists. Since my army is mostly centered around close range shooting the Terminators add insurance that my shooty elements don't get assaulted right away. It's kind of hard to charge that unit of Sternguard who just shot at you when a squad of TH/SS Terminators are jumping down your throat the following phase.

Termies are great with their surivability. (esp. 3++) The problem is that if you dont use them right, you can have them left out in the open and they will go down to massed fire (even from lasguns). They are an pretty high points wise, but if you get them into the right place, they will wade through quite a few things. I havent put together my assault termies yet. (I even have the box and the FW SW conversion kit, just havent put it together yet) When I run termies with my SW, I'll have 2 assault cannons, H.flamer, and a storm bolter, plus my lord with a frost blade and s.bolter. That allows me to put out quite a bit of fire and then cause some damage in CC.
A guy I play with runs 3 squads of them in land raiders,1 dedicated and 2 heavy support. He sometimes even takes a 4th landraider that he puts scouts in to score. He runs the special character shrike then his terminators have a almost 26 inch charge. Its pretty scary to have that happen 2nd turn. Even first turn if you went first and failed to kill any of his land raiders. Expensive....yes....worth it yest. 1200/2000 points that will run through an army.
Have also seen vulkan with similiar build except had tactical squads with meltas and m-meltas.
