Do guard have ability to take dreads in any way?.. Either through allies or whatever..
I'm thinking about converting dreads, bulking them up by a lot, and making them carry autocannons to be my hydras.. throw them on a chariot base or something to replicate the size.
Wondering whether people will have any problems with it in tourneys.. the normal hydra looks boring to me..
I am kinda partial to the idea of taking 2 sentinels (mainly legs) and mounting the Aegis Defense Autocannon being released. Mount that on a board the roughly same size as a Chimera.
Couple other options would be the defiler chassis as legs, or rhino/leman russ for the tred-head.
I am wondering about rules for scratch built items. I know roughly the same siloette to cover/LOS is not an issue, but since the hydra is not scheduled as an official model (sorry Forgeworld is not official) what all can you pull from to scratch build it?
Also, the Grey Knight Dreadnought is a heavy, and they are not options for allies

The track units are 11.5cm long, but the main body (such as the Hydra) may be slightly longer. I only have half-finished plasticard hybrids, so I can't say the Hydra's exact length. I believe 1-2 extra cm will work.

On the hrydras size use a chimera and add a turret.i use my chimeras for everything cause i have a friend who lets me playtest some new stuff.i couldn't use it in a tourmament but i never usally enter tormaments
for the emperor, for the great maw, blood for the blood god,
for the horned rat!!!!!
what the answer to this is: If your opponent decided to be an ass and call a judge over, (who is busy and won't mess about), and points out that your hydra is... fire points in the wrong areas / has half the template size of a chimera / etc / whatever they're being a problem on. What will the judge say? He may say yes, remove it - end of story.
F/W isn't official, but it wouldn't have that problem. I'd stick to a chimera sized model personally. - maybe a mini defiler would have the same dimensions. maybe swap the legs on a dreadnaught to tracks that extend behind the torso.
It's your risk.

yup, use a chimera... mod a turret for it if you don't get the forgeworld one. The forgeworld hydra is built off of a basalisk (chimera) chassis. the length/width is the same as the track length, the height with the turret is probably the same as a bassy.
It sounds more like the OP wants to scratch build his own walker with hydra autocannons and 'pass it off' as a hydra. Best bet here is apocalypse and your own custom datasheet. Not really feasible in normal rules. In friendly games, sure do whatever as long as your opponent agrees.
