I brought this topic up because i recently started experimenting with alternative HQ choices of the guard army, and had pretty good success with it - particularly the psyker. Of course there is no doubt that company commander is the wisest choice, but since a guard player can feature a second HQ I though why not ...
Anyway, I noticed that lightning arc is a wonderful ability when it comes to facing lightly armored armies like orks, nids, eldar, dark eldar and other guard. Str6 is enough to wound almost anything, while 2d6 shots should be enough to severely cripple a 10 man squad. The range prevents him from using the ability from afar but if joined by a vet, or storm trooper unit he greatly increases their killing potentioal. With him joining a storm trooper unit I was able to wipe out a 17 man ork unit at point blank, and the scary thing is they could kill a lot more.
Nigthshroud ability has prooven for me to have mixed results. When I had the psyker join a unit of storm troopers, it prooved to be pretty effective as I had a way to deny my opponent the opportunity of shooting them. So essentialy not only are you preserving the squad that the psyker is with, but at the same time you make the enemy squad WASTE that turn of shootng if they fail their Ld test. Again, very useful when fighting Orks, eldar, guard and especialy tau.
If anyone else knows something about these guys that I dont, feel free to share.
He is certainly shooty enough to belong in the Guard but the Nightshroud is next to useless--a 1 in 12 chance of not getting shot at by most enemies? Not exactly reliable. On the plus side, I remember reading he has the only force weapon in the Codex. Good guy if you want your leaders to get their hands dirty...brains dirty?
I can't get myself to care about orders so I'm considering the Primaris or the Commie Lord, too. Probably the latter as leadership is what I want most from my HQ but I just haven't been able to play lately. Maybe I'll give the Primaris a tryout this evening.

Take away the stupid force weapon and make him 30pts cheaper and he'd be awesome. As-is, you pay such a premium for that thing that he will probably never ever use in any game you're going to win.
I was wondering about taking him in a 500pt Combat Patrol List?
Could make a change from the usual things?
Only an idiot fights a war on two fronts. Only the heir to the throne of the kingdom of idiots would fight a war on twelve fronts.
I like Primaris Psykers, they're a break from the old Sanctioned Psykers which I found were pretty useless. Apart from that, the model is cool, and the Lightning Arc ability works wonders against other Guard, Orks, Eldar, Dark Eldar and Tyranids. As to 2 in a 500pt list... that would kick some serious ass, although I must confess I think you could spend the points better elsewhere.
Primaris Psykers are best used as a support for a veteran sqaud with 3 plasma guns. The amount of anti-personel firepower that they can kick out is immense.
Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
Eh, Lightning Arc is decent but not terribly reliable, and Nightshroud is just horrible. The force weapon is useless and he doesn't even have any psychic defense.
He's cheap, but I'd rather have a CCS to lead the army or an allied Inquisitor (with psychic hood) instead.

Personally I think he's pretty pants, so is the LC. To me it just looks like a gimmick choice, to make it look as if IG players really do have options in HQ when, in reality, if you want an HQ that will help you win games the CC is the only real option.
