With the idea of building a semi competetive 1500pt army, i came up with this. I wondered if was possible to have a competetive guard army without infantry platoons.
My idea was using a pure mech army with all troops being veterans in chimeras with special weapons. You could fill all six troop slots and should have enough points left over for a few tanks tanks. (i havn't done the math)
Is this a viable option?
Its my birthday tomorro and have posted this to help me decide what to buy. Cheers!
The most competitive lists I've seen lately don't even fill all six troops slots. You can easily get by with 4 vets in Chimeras at 2000 points.
Rule #1 of Mech Guard: Never get out of your Chimera.

RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Well, happy early birthday then! Its my birthday tomorro and have posted this to help me decide what to buy. Cheers!
Of course if you're going on a shopping spree, you'll need at least 3 Chimeras, 20 troopers and a commander with retinue, though if you look at some of the lists in the army list forums, most take around 5 Chimeras (with troops inside of course) and up. You'll definitely want Leman Russes since you won't have as many lasguns to thin hordes out, barring that, Hellhounds/Banewolves are fun, Hellhounds being one of the few vehicles you wouldn't mind putting together in a squadron. Then again, who can resist the new Valks? Ah so much fun... I might go make a list right now just for the hell of it.

I most deffinatly is viable mate. I've got one.
It's Straken in chimera, 6 vet squads in chimeras, 2 demolishers and a Leman russ, It works out at 2000pts asn usually does really well. It's avery aggressive style of guard army compared to the mroe defensive sit back and shoot guard lists.
You can also go down the route of an all Valk/vendy mounted Vet list.
Well thank you for your comments and such quick replies. looks like im onto a good thing then. I think i'll start off with a 1000pt force and see what works for me. Is mech still a good choice in lower point games? Been playing WHFB for last few years and havn't played with the 5th edition rules yet. Im just getting back into 40k now see.
Yep, mech is easily one of the toughest builds in 5th edition. Vets, PBS, and CCS in Chimeras or Valks/Vends and all sorts of other tanky bits makes for a very nasty army.

IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
This is equivalent of running the IG mech armor company. 5th edition favors mech lists so you can't go wrong with doing it. But because of this, every other list is pretty much kitted out for tank busting to some degree.
Where the heck did all them guardsmen come from?
Great Wolf! Is that the howl of the 13th?
Mech Vets is, imo, our strongest list atm.
Just load up on meltaguns, throw in some LRBTs and perhaps a Vendetta or Banewolf and you are good to go
