I've used and seen a lot of other people using the MM/HF Tornados, but am curious if any one has been successful in using a MM/MM or HF/HF combo instead? I usually run a Vulkan list. Using the same weapons seems like it could be particularly nasty. I know your limiting yourself to one type of target, but it seems like it could be devastating with Vulkan's abilities. Or is this just over-kill?
I like specialised units, so I tend to go MM/MM with mine. Not tried a HF/HF yet, but only because we don't have a lot of horde armies in our games. I'm hoping to try it out against the orcs very soon
I run 2 single multi melta LS, but I've been thinking about putting a HF on each one for 2 reasons; the first is that, after I pop a tank, using a flamer on some orks would be useful. The second is that I've run into a lot of Eldar Rangers lately, and the ability to zip up next to them and use that would be very useful for me. Death on a 2-up? Yes please!
I prefer the MM/HF design as it can do 2 roles equally well and if the enemy are nearby you can move 6" and fire both. Not that the weapons compliment each other too well but the dual MM or Dual HF designs will only rarely fire both weapons too if they want to stay alive. Using manouverability and the ability to move over terrain and enemy troops is the land speeder's primary defence.
As for a single MM only I would prefer an attack bike. Cheaper cost and in many cases more survivable.

I have 2 LS's in my main list I use. 1 is a Typhoon pattern TML/M.Melta and 2) the HB/HB Tornado pattern you are asking about.
The Tornado, when used properly is pretty devastating without being fragile. I don't tend to use it as a throw away, which many single M.Melta speeders are used for. Fly in, pop a tank, then die to return fire. While land speeders are fragile, and can be destroyed with little effort, the key is to use the HB/HB Tornado as a support unit at 30"+. Usually supporting a single tactical squad, from range pouring fire into a unit during their rapid fire turn. 9/10 times with a tactical squad that close to a thinned out unit, their priority will not be the speeder.
Keep it at range, use it as support, and it will usually survive the entire battle. Last turn objective contesting is a nice bonus too.
