I haven't played 40k since the last edition really only playing a game or 2 with the 5th ed rules. I have a IG army and could field one but am slightly overwhelmed with the amount of choices since I have lots of guys and tanks but only so many force org slots. I know there are pros and cons to vehicle squads but also want to just try some things out to see how they fair.
Problem is, I dont' get a lot of time to play so most of my gaming is theorizing.
I have enough guys to fill out a full platoon with 3 infantry squads, maybe 2 platoons depending on loadout. All these are built and ready to play
I have lots of special weapons troops 8 nade launchers
4 plasma 3 melta (plus a new command squad I haven't taken off the sprues yet)
3 missile launchers 4 lascannons 2-3 autocannons
2 leman russ battle tanks (1 with HB sponsons 1 with lascannon and plasma sponsons)
1 converted hellhound (could be turned back into chimera), 1 converted hellhound/bandwolf
1 executioner or Punisher converted
1 colossus (almost put together)
The problem I have is how many tanks should I take, should I just try to fit as many as I can and try them out? The colossus and the medusa don't really jive together due to range and roles. If I take them seperate then I can't fit my executioner and punisher in (assuming I take the LRBT together in a squad)
If I take all the tanks and the 2 fast attack tanks, I dont' really have room but for a few vet squads or one command squad and a platoon. I don't really want a all or nothing list (all tanks, no infantry) even though that's what I may eventually gear towards. Which guys/tanks should I leave behind. What's a nice balance?
I was thinking maybe 3-4 vet squads with plasma and heavy weapons (maybe a few meltas with a chimera) and then as many tanks as I can fit. Should I stick with the banewolf or hellhound? should I take both or is that silly?

for a 1500pt list a minimum infantry requirement(assuming your using regular infantry platoons) is probably 60 men(if they are going to footslog it that is) however if you plan on having them ride transports or if you were to use veteran squads with carapace, having less may still work.
as for vehicles, you probably want at least 2 heavy tanks, to take the fire off your other forces, and at least 1 medium vehicle(ie artlilery, chimera, hellhound, etc)
dont take my responce too seriously, for some lists I am very wrong with my estimate, for example if you went with all infantry and had over 100 men, you probably would not need many vehicles, perhaps you wouldn't need any at all.
or if you went all mechanized you might only need them minimum force requirement.
Hope it helps.
Hellhounds are good tanks

I use between 50-60 men in my mechanised list depending on whether I am playing 1,500 or 1,750pts. For a gun line, at least 80 men I would imagine at 1,500pts. Tanks if you take any you need at least two, one will die really quick on it's own.
really with the new codex in 5th edition; the proportion of tank or infantry could go either way whichever you preferred. there's a lot of mech players having success with their lists now, while my infantry list itself is brutal as well.
so it's all good just as long as you bring enough troop units to get the objectives alive.
