It seems to be that the basic Assault and Tactical troops are overpriced. They do not seem to boast any gear or anything that makes these units more powerful than vanilla SM's. I am new to the BA info, so I def could be wrong.
Is it that you are getting the Death Company? Is it in utilizing the special characters and vehicles?
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a new BA force, to get the most bang for your buck (in points)?
I assume it's because you get the Death Company for 'free'..?
Edit: whooops.. Sorry, was a bit too fast there.. just read the heading..
But yeah I think it's because of the Death Company ^^
I'm in no position to give any kind of advice though.. I think currently you'd be better off using them as count-as vanilla marines.. but I've never really studied their rules.. I guess it depends on what you like also.. There's the Dante build and Mephisto isn't all bad either..
I'm sure though that some BA player will be able to tell you in detail though.. xD

Well a couple features in the dex make Blood Angels quite different from vanilla.
Assault Marines are troops. That's a fairly big deal but you pay a bit more for that.
The way the chapter fights depends greatly on special characters. Dante gives preferred enemy to friendly units close to him. I can say from experience how awesome that is. While BA units generally feel more expensive, independent characters are actually well priced imo for what they do. BA characters have higher initiative which is a big deal for close combat. Lemartes is a bargain for what he comes with.
Bottom line though, you'll need lots of assault troops to be effective as BA. You're better off playing vanilla if tailoring a force to close combat isn't your thing. Its not that vanilla equivalents are bad. You just generally get them a bit cheaper and with more options and up to date rules in the vanilla codex. ie, storm shields.
All costs considered I find that at the 1500 mark and up BA can still be very competitive. I have a pretty decent 1000 point list but I can vanilla does better at that value.
The squads all include a slight points bump to account for the Death company. Thats 99% of why the points costs are different.
Nevermore Chapter: 6200 pts; 97/49/11; Longest Streak: 9 Wins/4 Losses; Nearing Completion
yeah the points are to allow you to bring death company into battle, so my advice is that since you are paying for them already. use them.
FOR THE GREAT SANGUINIUS AND THE EMPEROR....red and black all the way.

As a regular opponent of a BA player, I can seriously say that a very very competitive 1500point list can be made up - one that rips the guts out of other CC list builds.
Quite a lot of players recomend that, up to 1500points, assault troops are the way to go, as you can get into combat very fast and the sheer amount of attacks can overwhelm a lot of opponents. These players then usually say that, over 1500points, the lack of models (due to the cost of assault marines compared to regular 'vanilla' tactical marines) starts to become a problem and you need to switch to a more shooty army style.
From my experience, not a lot can beat 30 or 40 assault marines apart from an enemy that really is a CC beast, like nids.
FYI - Dante + Honour Guard with Banner, Priest, Adept, PlasGun and Sarge with Power Wep = 450+points of CC ownage! (just avoid demolisher cannons!)
Yup. 1500 is a comfy spot. Totally agree on higher points meaning you need to really think about taking more shooty backup. Still find it works just fine though hehe.
Any list where you can get Dante and Corbulo's buffs working together = tons of stuff getting ripped to shreds.
That's why all competitive BA lists have speeders and bikes with multi meltas =)
READ the free codex tbh and you know why......
Shas'O dent'O r'myr cadre ( 1850pts ) ( O'shovah breakaway rules )
Space wolves " dentonir " the red wolves company ( Canis wolf cavalry list, 1000pts )
