for more versatility would you have a problem if i modelled my sternguard with a flamer instead of a combi-flamer
why the heck do you want a flamer just a combi flamer for special issue amunutie
cos my army is salamanders and i qnat to take full advantage of vulkans special rule and having a flamer that can fire every round is one step closer towards that goal

Model your squads how you like. After all, it's your army.
Now, with that being said, unless it's a heavy flamer I see no point in taking anything other than bolters and combi-weapons on them. If you want to use the standard assault weapons their best use is in Tactical and Assault squads.
I play Salamanders too and the last thing I want, except when using my combi-meltas, is to use anything other than the special ammo. It's that good imho. The strength of Sternguard lies in shooting with their special ammo.
