Hey all I've just recently unpacked my Imperial Guard Army and purchased the newest Codex. I've been trying to get an army list together and I'm stuck on a couple of things. The biggest and first is Medipacks. I can't decide if they are worth the 30 points. Do I throw them all out all together, keep one in my Company Command Squad, or do i take them with every unit that is capable of fielding one? I was hoping some of the expert commanders here could throw me a few pointers. Thanks in advance for all of your help.
Almost never worth the points, no. The cost to give FNP to 5 x T3 models is just outrageous. Especially as the T3 increases immensely the number of weapons you can't even use it against! Even if you're trying to use it to keep plasma gunners alive, wouldn't you rather just have two more plasma guns?
It's definitely a fluff/for fun thing. You might consider it in a unit with Straken, or if you have a full command squad of ten models, so at least you're not paying as much permodel for the mediocre ability. (of course that means you paid for Body Guards, which aren't exactly a stellar choice to begin with!)
~If your planning on getting your command squad into the thick of it then yeah i recon it's worth it. Running your blokes towards the enemy you're going to take some fire and it will save you from the worst of it. (hiding behing an infantry squad helps too)
If you really want to go to town on your command squad, you can go for 2 bodyguards, carapace and a medipack. This squad starts to get Very hard to kill and with a powerfist in there you can actually cause some hurt to MEQ's.
If you're command squad is going to be sat at the back of the board giving orders and being boring then you might as well spend the points on Camo Cloaks or put the points towards a Chimera.
Not worth the points.
In my first army list (1500pts) I had three medics; one for each of my two CCSs and my single PCS to keep plasma gunners alive, but I quickly realised my folly, dropped two of them, and bought extra special weapons and a few goodies for the rest of my army as well. Besides, plasma gunners can be kept alive be the re-rolls conferred by "Bring it Down" if my understanding of the twin-linked and gets hot rules are correct.
I still retain one medic for my command squad for the sole reason that I spent ages converting and painting him, but he may become worth it if I expand the squad with regimental advisors in larger battles.

The medipack isnt worth the points. For me I was never able to use it since I always got shot by something that caused instant death. Although my HQ never died because he knew when to move his *** when things got too hot. For 30pts you can get so much more than just a medipack. If you really worry about the suvivability of you Commander I would get either better armour like carapace armour or camo cloaks or you can get two bodyguards.
Personally I love medipacks. Feel no pain combined with a 5+ armor save works out to be equivalent to power armor I think. I've had good experiences with a very expensive command squad featuring a single bodyguard, an astropath, a medic, a standard bearer, Straken, and a commissar lord with a power sword all in camo cloaks. The total comes out to about 280 something but the only unit I lost the squad to was Abbaddon and a bunch of termies.
Feel no pain is great because it's basically a carapace save against all the AP5 weaponry out there, and against anything that doesn't pierce your armor, or if your smart and in cover, it's an extra save greatly increasing the survival of a command squad that isn't hiding in a chimera.
Now I'm running a much more economical command squad with an astropath, medic, 2x meltas and a powerfist commander and a commissar lord and I still think that the medic is worth it from personal experience.
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
It's a good idea, but a horrible point cost
30 points goes a LONG way in a guard army, and I could never justify it to myself in spending it on FNP for a handful of T3 models, unless I had the insane idea of making some kind of point bloated CC CCS... but I would have to be intoxicated and going on my 36th hour of no sleep, to do something like that.
For those 30 points I could get a MoO which denies FNP to most things and made 1.5x his points back in the last game I was in.
So no, I do not use medipacks.
Space Marines: W15/L7/D3
Imperial Guard: W6/L4/D0
I use medi packs all the time. They are great! Helps to keep the CCS alive. The main reason for my use is that I run a CCS with Straken, 2 flamers, carapce armor and a medi pack, and since I use them agressivly, an extra 4+ save never hurts, besides most of the guns that cause Instant Death on T3 weapons would also ignore your armor saves aswell, but for some reason the people I play against leave my CCS alone until it is to late. I guess they think that a 5 man unit of IG isnt all that scary.
Anyway, I say that for an agressive CCS that will be in the thick of things, a medi pack is a great option that really helps those assualtly CCS's.
No one seems to have mentioned Soviet Platoons....
Full load out of of infantry squads and the PCS with med pack. Have them all combine and run them and the enemy and I'm sure with Chenkov in your amry you could cause a few headaches.
