Trying to fit as many troop choices as possible into my 5th Ed list has made me consider these guys again. Ok so they're a pants deal at one pt less than a battle sister, but the important thing is you can buy squads of 5 rather than having to fork out for 10, and then put them in a Rhino for 100 pts, ok, so you want to spend a few more points than that to give them some weapons etc to make them a little more special, but thats still way cheaper then getting sisters if you want a 3rd mobile troop choice for nabbing objectives.
What do you think?
The only time I'd actually bring storm troopers is if I was playing a horde of immolators list like Bell of Lost Souls put up on their website a while back. 3 squads of 6 with meltas in 3 heavy choice immolators.
I take them as 'throwaway' troops in low point games, squads of 5 or 6 with plasma guns and often chimeras, generally supporting shooty inquisition, landraiders, assassins - stuff like that.
I find that they tend to eat into my faith pool in sisters lists, a couple more points will get you celestians if you arn't looking to hold an objective with the unit.
I also have 2 units of arbites in my 'crazies' list, because zealots don't count as compulsory troops choices. They serve as a walking cover save for the fanatics.
I really dont think ST are woth it for the 1pt diffrance a battle sister offers so much more. And with faith making AP1 bolters plasma is not as big an attraction.
Model for model the Sisters are a million times better than Stormies. The Stormies just don't stack up. But then again they're not supposed to; ISTs exist solely as a cheap alternative, and as a cheap alternative they're fantastic. 5 ISTs with two plasma or meltaguns in a Rhino costs 120pts; stick them in a Chimera and it's 145.
So yeah. As long as you don't put yourself in a position where you're relying on them for anything other than cheap special weapons, Stormies are brilliant.
If your goal is really mechanized objective takers, induct a mechanized infantry platoon.
Just thought only reason for storm troopers in a WH army is special weapons. can give meltas to a domination squad, or do vet melta drive by (new guard). If plasma is what your wanting then maybe storm troopers but in general with a 4+ save will end up over heating most of your own troops. So go with domination squads there awesome, or inducted vet squads (like what InquisitorAffe said).
Oh if only you could induct veteran squads... ;(
trust me i have tried the whole 'fill my troop choices with 50 point squads' dont do it. for that 1 point bonus they are just a huge huge huge buff. you can take a lot of stormies but when they can be heavy boltered down they just dont compare
Fear the Fun.
