Hey everybody, I want to start up a Space Marine army, but not sure what chapter to go with.
I mainly play with friends, so i want a nice balance between fluff and competitiveness.
I am leaning towards more of a "ranged" army rather than a "melee" one as my main army is World Eaters (Berserkers are awesome!).
Below I have listed some units that I like/dislike, so hopefully that will help you point me in the direction of the chapter best for me.
Out the Special Characters, I like Shrike and Vulkan. The thing with Shrike is that it warrants more of a "melee" type army. I love the idea of twin-linking all of my meltas and flamers!
Drop pods seem cool.
I like Terminators, but I am weary of them due to their cost.
Not a fan of Scouts. If they have Sniper Rifles, they are ok I guess, but I dont think they fit well with Space Marines.
Sternguard seem really cool.
I like Dreadnoughts due to their cheapness.
I love Land Speeders.
Not so much a fan of bikes.
I would only have an Assault Squad if I had an attached Chaplain.
And I like Whirlwinds. Yeah, Whirlwinds.
I am leaning towards a Salamanders army, but with the fluff I have read, they dont really use Land Speeders. Which is a problem because I really like them, and they seem a good way to get more Multi-Meltas and Heavy Flamers into the army.
Salies don't really use land speeders, but that doesn't mean they don't use them at all. They do have a reasonable number of speeders which will be deployed when needed.
Here are a few sample lists that you might like to work towards building up.
Captain with combi-melta and lightning claw. (125 )
Tactical squad (x10 ) with flamer and missile launcher (170 )
Tactical squad (x10 ) with melta gun and multi-melta (175 )

Total = 995points
you have real described a salamanders army with your dislikes and likes. Sit back and watch the fire works army. as a reasonable experiences man of the static army i will warn you that its boring a hell after a few months of games which is why you take assualt termies and assualt marines and charge 10 tactical marines into a 10 man berserker unit and win huh what oh right you not me urm yeah you want at least 2 units that are meant to go into combat with others at the back picking off tough targets you dont want to fight cough vindicator cough 3 of them
My main battle problem is i take uber units as a challenge as to how many units i have to throw at it before it dies rather then tactical bring it down
