Are we at the top as the best army?
I keep hearing my friends go on and on about their armies and how "nasty" they are but i keep running out of stuff to say to boast about mine..... which makes me wonder! do we have anything cool to boast about?
Thanks for answering
Tank squadrons, orders, a very viable all-troop army (besides an HQ obviously) ...
very reliable troop army? they mock it and call the guardsman weak.....
Thought they don't laugh at storm troopers or ogryns though....
Send a nice big platoon or two at them, tag teamed with chi-meltas and outflanking penal legion. Then laugh at them as they realise this is barely even half your army.
I have played Guard for years. I can't count the number of times I have played someone and they have laughed at playing the guard, expecting an easy victory. It is priceless when most of their army is gone by turn 2 or 3.
The guard are a hard army to master. Every thing has to work together or your army falls apart. Once you get the hang of it though the guard can be a very powerful force.
Also @Enhanced: I wouldn't say that IG troop armies are very viable.. I guess a good player could make a decent infantry list, however seeing as the majority of IG is mechanizing this suggests that infantry lists aren't the best choice right now..
@Ninga: Storm Troopers and Ogryns are the IG infantry choices people laugh at the most.. Generally not worth their points.. Third in the list would be Penal Legion..
Mech vets lists are pretty common though, you can have a fair few of those swinging around supporting a large platoon, I've had this list work quite well.

The Old Guard Codex wasn't for everyone. You had to get used to the idea of sacrificing half your army for a win. Many players never understood that for all the killing they did, they still lost to good Guard players/builds. Only Orks players really got it, as long as they aren't the Nob Biker style players.
The new Guard Codex is a little more accessable, but still not for everyone.
With the new Codex we got a crapload of nifty toys. For the most part, the focus is now on vehicles, not men. Yes, there may be an all-infantry army that is viable, but Mech is really the power of Guard nowadays.
Even with my Mech vets, the only time you see a soldier on the table is if their Chimera is blown up.
So yeah, we finally have a strong army that is as competitive in an "average" build as any other army. The Codex, however, is very balanced. Our main revenge for years of weakness is not a broken codex, but a good one that we veterans can use to abuse the lazy players with powerlists that played themselves.
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
But I can see players fearing the Stormtroopers because of the AP3. People dont like to lose their armour save.
The one thing thats great about the Guard is pie plates. Have a pie plate contest to see who can have the most pie plates on the table during one turn and the Guard will always be on top.
